Preakness Results 2012: Horses That Will Rock Belmont Stakes

Daniel KockJun 3, 2018

I'll Have Another used the same script as the Kentucky Derby to win the Preakness and keep Triple Crown hopes alive.

Once again, Bodemeister set the pace only to see I'll Have Another come from behind and catch him at the finish line.

All eyes will be on I'll Have Another in a few weeks at the Belmont Stakes as he goes for the elusive Triple Crown. Affirmed was the last to accomplish this feat in 1978.

There have been horses in the past to win the first two, but cannot get the final race.

The Belmont Stakes offers a very different challenge. The course is longer than the first two which puts more emphasis on endurance.

Will I'll Have Another get that elusive crown? Or will a different horse knock him off?

Here is a look at the horses who will have a good showing at the final race of the Triple Crown.

Bodemeister

Bodemeister was considered one of the favorites entering the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, and came so close to winning in both.

Bodemeister set the pace in both races and had the lead near the finish, only to watch I'll Have Another beat him at the end.

However, the horse is still a serious contender in the Belmont Stakes. Bodemeister has shown in both races that he can quickly get to the front.

Now, jockey Mike Smith will need to adjust slightly to the horse being out of gas at the end.

Smith seemed to be shell-shocked after his loss on Saturday. He knows he has a good horse and thought he had done enough to win.

He needs to leave Bodemeister with a little more left at the end to finish the deal.

Back-to-back second place finishes proves Bodemeister will be a tough contender once again at the Belmont Stakes.

Dullahan

Dullahan did not run at the Preakness Saturday, but look for the horse to have a good showing at the Belmont Stakes.

Kent Desormeaux rode Dullahan to a third place finish at the Kentucky Derby and won the Blue Grass which was a month earlier.

He finished second with Dullahan at the Palm Beach this year.

Dullahan's status for the Belmont Stakes is currently probable. If the three-year-old horse is part of the field at the Belmont Stakes, expect a strong showing from him.

Dullahan's ability combined with the direction of Desormeaux will lead to another good run.

I'll Have Another

Obviously, I'll Have Another has to be on this list.

The horse has run in dramatic fashion over the past two races and will look to accomplish something that hasn't been done since 1978.

Bodemeister's trainer and jockey were both dumbfounded after the race on Saturday.

They knew they had ran a race good enough to win, but recognized the talent of I'll Have Another.

The next challenge will be to time his run correctly at the Belmont Stakes. The track is longer and presents a different challenge to jockey Mario Gutierrez.

Gutierrez will need to make sure to time the finish right in order to make history.

The nation will be tuned in to see whether or not I'll Have Another can pull it out, and expect him to be near the top at the Belmont Stakes.
