UFC 94 Fallout Pt. II: Payouts, Penn Yet To File, Medical Suspensions
(In case you missed it, here's a link to the first installment of UFC 94 Fallout.)
Penn yet to file a complaint: To clarify on a story we linked to and other news outlets reported Sunday, BJ Penn has yet to file a formal complaint with the Nevada State Athletic Commission as of Monday night regarding 'Vaselinegate'. Yes, that does sound disgusting.
In case you missed the hubbub, NSAC Executive Director Keith Kizer—and apparently many others—saw Phil Nurse touch Georges St. Pierre's back with his hand moments after he had applied Vaseline to his face between the 1st and 2nd round.
It then gets hazy as to how much was applied, when it was applied and what the intent was and even though Kizer pointed this error out in the ring and the substance was wiped from GSP's back, the furor continues.
Among the voices being heard, UFC's Dana White reportedly questioned whether trainer Greg Jackson or Nurse should ever be allowed to corner a fighter again. Oooooookay. Everyone just step away from the cage for a minute, ok?
You can get the full details from several of the major MMA blogs, but what's happening is attention is being diverted away from what happened: Penn getting dominated by GSP for four rounds to the point Penn's corner threw in the towel. There was no amount of slippery substance in the world that could have prevented that blatant of an ass-kicking.
We hope that Penn's handlers will realize this and just move on to preparing for his Lightweight title defense against Kenny Florian.
- The NSAC also released the full list of fighter salaries for the UFC 94 event which you can check out here. GSP led the list with $400k, which included a $200k win bonus but doesn't include a PPV buy bonus which could put his deal over $1 million. Penn earned $125k and his win bonus would have been $125k. These totals are nice, but they still seem low considering the high expectations for the PPV numbers and the $4 million+ house.
Lyoto Machida took home $120k (includes $60k win bonus), while Thiago Silva took home $29k. The total payout for the night was $1,057,000, not counting the PPV bonuses and other financial perks that are unreported. This was a far cry from the Affliction payout which may be closer to $5 million when it's all said and done, but that also may be a reason why people are speculating they might be done.
Making news over the weekend was Wanderlei Silva dropping down to the Middleweight division. At 185, he will join a growing division that includes kingpin champion and fellow PRIDE alum Anderson Silva, Rich Franklin, Dan Henderson, Michael Bisping and more. Plenty of name value talent for Silva to battle, perhaps helping resurrect a career that has gone off track in recent fights.
12 fighters were tested at UFC 94 for performance enhancers and other 'drugs of abuse'. Georges St-Pierre, BJ Penn, Lyoto Machida, Thiago Silva, Clay Guida, Nate Diaz, Stephan Bonnar, Jon Jones, Jake O’Brien, John Howard, Thiago Tavares and Karo Parisyan were all tested. If there are any violations, we'll pass the info along. (Thanks to MMA Frenzy)
Five fighters were medically suspended by the NSAC following UFC 94, but nothing outside the norm. Penn, Thiago Silva, Stephan Bonnar, Akihiro Gono and Chris Wilson all were on the list, the details of which you can also get at MMA Frenzy.
