Preakness 2012 Replay: Watch I'll Have Another and Bodemeister's Epic Finish

Mike MoraitisJun 4, 2018

The 137th Preakness Stakes was one for the ages as I'll Have Another and Bodemeister once again were alone at the finish line, with I'll Have Another narrowly grabbing the second leg of the Triple Crown.

Pimlico's track saw a race very similar to the one at Churchill Downs just two weeks ago. The Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes were mirror images of each other.

Check out the exciting finish that saw I'll Have Another display a legendary ability to close out a race.

I don't know about you, but that race had me screaming at my television, cheering for the eventual winner, I'll Have Another. There's no doubt it was the most exciting race this writer has ever seen.

Jockey Mario Gutierrez waited for the perfect time to strike and take the lead. Had he waited a split second longer to let I'll Have Another go, Gutierrez would not have been able to catch Bodemeister.

He can say all he wants about how the horse does all the work, but there is some incredible skill involved from Gutierrez's end. Clearly, he knows how to ride I'll Have Another to perfection.

That leaves the Belmont Stakes and a shot at history. No horse has won all three legs of the Triple Crown since Affirmed did it in 1978. Since then, it's been 34 years of close-calls and utter disappointment in the hopes of seeing the next record-breaking horse.

I'll Have Another is special, and at this point, I don't think there's much debate about it. His patient approach and late explosion is the perfect combination to take the longest leg of the Triple Crown.
