Preakness 2012 Payouts: How Top Earnings Compare to Kentucky Derby
The 2012 Preakness Stakes is now history, with I'll Have Another completing the second leg of the Triple Crown with a victory over Bodemeister, but if you were looking for massive payouts like the ones you saw after the Kentucky Derby, you're going to be disappointed.
While this race was even more exhilarating than the one at Churchill Downs, I'll Have Another was right behind Bodemeister in the pre-race odds, meaning the payouts this time around are only a fraction as large as the massive ones we saw after the Derby.
I'll Have Another had a furlong less with which to work with at Pimlico, and the shorter distance almost cost him a win. Somehow, some way, the colt found enough speed, grit and determination to pull off the victory by overtaking Bodemeister by a nose at the very last second.
Trainer Doug O'Neill was overwhelmed with emotion, the crowd went wild and my heart was pounding. Meanwhile, on the track afterwards, the colt and his jockey, Mario Gutierrez, were as calm as if they had just come in from a little practice run.

| Horse | Win | Place | Show |
| 1. I'll Have Another | 8.40 | 3.80 | 2.80 |
| 2. Bodemeister | 3.20 | 2.80 | |

| Horse | Win | Place | Show |
| 1. I'll Have Another | 32.60 | 13.80 | 9.00 |
| 2. Bodemeister | 6.20 | 5.60 | |
| 3. Dullahan | 7.20 |
As you can see, the numbers aren't even close. The Kentucky Derby was much more lucrative for the winners than the Preakness Stakes.
Still, from the perspective of pure sports, the Preakness was in a league of its own.
