HP Byron Nelson Championship 2012: Leaderboard Updates, Highlights and More

Nicholas GossMay 17, 2012

The PGA Tour moves to Texas for a very exciting week of golf, the 2012 HP Byron Nelson Championship.

Keegan Bradley returns to the tournament to defend his title, and he will have to compete against a tough field of talented players to repeat as the champion.

Louis Oosthuizen, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els and Vijay Singh are among the golfing stars looking to take on the challenging course at TPC Four Seasons and dethrone Bradley. This

Jason Dufner is the winner of the 2012 HP Byron Nelson Championship. And it didn't even come down to a playoff, which looked inevitable.

Dufner birdied the final hole to move to 11-under and beat Dicky Pride by one stroke.

Joe Durant, Marc Leishman, Jonas Blixt, and J.J. Henry all tied for third at nine-under.

Phil Mickelson finished tied for seventh at six-under.

Update at 5:01 p.m EST by Tim Keeney

This tournament is about to come down to the wire.

J.J. Henry, through 15 holes, is the leader at 10-under, but there are an amazing five golfers right behind him at nine-under, and four of those golfers are still playing.

Marc Leishman and Jonas Blixt are through 17, Dicky Pride is through 16 and Jason Dufner is through 15. Joe Durant is waiting in the clubhouse.

This may not be the highest-profile tournament, but it is about give us arguably the most exciting finish of the season.

Update at 3:50 p.m EST by Tim Keeney

With a birdie on hole No. 10, Jason Dufner has taken the lead at 10-under for the tournament. Marc Leishman (through 13), Dicky Pride (11), and J.J. Henry (10) all continue to nip at his heels at nine-under.

Mickelson is through 17 now, and remains two-strokes back at seven-under. He's going to have some nervous sitting around in the clubhouse later today.

Update at 3:06 p.m EST by Tim Keeney

Phil Mickelson has put together a masterful Sunday performance so far. Through 14 holes, he is five-under on the day and now seven-under for the tournament. He has jumped 16 spots and is now in fifth, just two strokes off the lead.

There are three men tied for the lead. Englishman Marc Leishman is four-under through 10 holes on the day, while Jason Dufner (one-under through 7) and J.J. Henry (two-under through 8) are tied with him at nine-under for the tourney.

Notable Names:

Matt Kuchar: T8 at -4 overall

Keegan Bradley and Dickie Pride currently hold the lead at -8, but they've got three golfers right behind them tied for third at -7. That group includes Jonas Blixt, who is shooting -5 on the day with three birdies and an Eagle on hole 11. Jason Dufner and Marc Leishman are also at -7 overall.

UPDATE THROUGH ROUND 2 by Eric Ball

Americans are the story through the first two rounds at TPC Four Seasons.

Right now there are six Americans in the top seven on the leaderboard including clubhouse leader Jason Dufner.

Dufner (Cleveland, OH) shot a four-under 66 to place him in sole position of first place heading into the weekend.

Right behind Dufner at six-under are a plethora of Americans.

Pat Perez (Phoenix, AZ), shot a three-under, Ryan Palmer (Amarillo, TX) shot an even-par 70, Matt Kuchar (Winter Park, FL) shot a two-under 68, as did Dicky Pride (Tuscaloosa, AL). Chad Campbell (Andrews, TX) shot a four-under and the lone non-American, Marc Leishman of Great Britain, shot a one-under.

Phil Mickelson is tied for 34th at one-under.

It’s shaping up to be a USA-type of weekend in Irving, TX and it looks like a massive upset would occur if somebody donning the stars and stripes doesn’t end up winning on Sunday.

UPDATE THROUGH ROUND 1 by Eric Ball

The leaderboard after the first round at the Byron Nelson is filled with names you may not be familiar with.

Ryan Palmer leads the pack after shooting a six-under 64. Palmer shot a bogey-free round as he looks to avenge the playoff loss to Keegan Bradley at the event last year.

Breathing down Palmer’s neck is Alex Cejka and Marc Leishman at five-under. While Cejka had a relatively steady round that was also without a bogey, Leishman had a wild afternoon.

He had not one, but two eagles including a two on the par-four 11th.

Matt Kuchar, fresh off his win at The Players Championship, leads a group of seven players that are tied for fourth at four-under.

Phil Mickelson didn’t fare well in his first round at the tournament in five years, shooting an even par 70. Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy are not participating in this weekend’s festivities.

Last Minute Prediction

My pick to win the 2012 Byron Nelson Championship is Phil Mickelson. Lefty has enjoyed a lot of success at courses in Texas throughout his career, and he is one of those players who can thrive even when the temperatures are really hot.

Look for Mickelson to dominate TPC Four Seasons and get himself back on the winning track.
