UFC on Fuel 3 Results: 5 Fights for Cody McKenzie to Take Next
Tonight on the preliminary card of UFC on Fuel 3, Cody McKenzie picked up his 11th consecutive win via first-round guillotine choke. Similar to Ronda Rousey, who is also famous for winning in the first round with a signature submission hold, McKenzie's gravitation towards to guillotine choke has led fans to dub it the McKenzietine.
Some may call McKenzie a one-trick pony. I choose to call him consistent.
Here is a look at five possible opponents for Cody McKenzie in his next fight.
Reza Madadi
1 of 5You likely aren't familiar with Reza Madadi, and that's OK.
At the age of 31, the Iranian fighter made his Zuffa debut at UFC on Fuel 2 back in April after a trio of wins over UFC veterans Junie Browning, Carlo Prater and Rich Clementi.
Madadi boasts a professional record of 12-2, with seven wins coming via submission and three coming by way of guillotine. In addition, he is riding the momentum of seven consecutive wins.
These lightweights have a propensity for submissions, but have had some entertaining stand-up exchanges too. No matter where this fight goes, it will be fun to watch.
Michael Johnson
2 of 5This bout was originally scheduled for UFC on FOX 2, and with both men picking up impressive wins, I don't see any reason to not try and work this bout onto an upcoming event.
Johnson and McKenzie have a history, as both men fought on Team GSP during the 12th season of The Ultimate Fighter. Each man has twice tasted defeat inside the Octagon and are the only two cast members coming off of wins right now.
Despite having powerful wrestling, Johnson found himself unable to deal with a submission he knew was coming when he lost to Paul Sass via heel hook back in October. It's possible that the McKenzietine may be equally difficult to avoid.
Paul Sass/Jacob Volkmann Winner
3 of 5Paul Sass and Cody McKenzie each have a signature submission. While McKenzie claims the guillotine, Sass favors the triangle choke.
Sass won six of his first seven fights via triangle and successfully used the maneuver for a seventh time in his UFC debut.
If Sass can pass the tough challenge ahead of him, he would make an excellent opponent for McKenzie.
Henry Martinez/Bernardo Magalhaes Winner
4 of 5Currently scheduled for a contest at UFC on FX in early June, Martinez and Magalhaes lost their UFC debuts and are hoping to bounce back in a big way.
Whoever finds himself victorious in this contest is a good matchup for McKenzie based on divisional rankings, and they find themselves in similar shoes after bouncing back from tough losses.
Takanori Gomi
5 of 5Now that McKenzie has joined the Diaz brothers in Stockton, perhaps it's time that he steps in to fight someone who has some history with the Cesar Gracie fighters.
Both Nick and Nate Diaz were about to finish Japanese legend Takanori Gomi in previous contests, and The Fireball Kid may be interested in earning some revenge against someone who represents the 209.
A bout with unranked McKenzie isn't as far-fetched as it may sound. While the heights of his career peak far and above that of McKenzie, Gomi has a similar UFC record of 2-2 and is coming off of a come-from-behind win against unheralded Eiji Mitsuoka. At this point, putting together wins is the most important thing for him, regardless of the reputation his opponents may or may not have.
