Preakness 2012 Horses: I'll Have Another and More Underrated Colts
The Kentucky Derby was headlined by I'll Have Another, an extremely overlooked horse, taking home the victory. At the Preakness, it will happen again.
I'll Have Another and Bodemeister are the clear favorites, and rightfully so after their ridiculously impressive performances at Churchill. But the sheer amount of attention these two horses are getting makes the other contenders at Pimlico very dangerous.
Let's take a closer look at the horses going under the radar as the second biggest race of the year approaches.
I'll Have Another
Wait, what? The winner of the Kentucky Derby is underrated at the Preakness?
Dang right he is, but only underrated in the fact he should be the clear favorite instead of the second favorite behind Bodemeister.
Listen, I understand the appeal behind Bode. At Churchill, he ran one of the more impressive races in history before only being passed in the final 100 yards, Pimlico is a shorter track, and most importantly, Bodemeister is a cool name.
But he didn't win. I'll Have Another won. Most seem to agree the short track means Bodemeister will be able to keep his ridiculous pace up for longer, but who's to say it won't benefit I'll Have Another, too?
Take another look at the Kentucky Derby:
I'll Have Another stayed right behind the insanely fast early pace and then made his move at the very end. That's what this horse excels at. There's no question to me that he could just make his move earlier at Pimlico.
Furthermore, there isn't a speedster like Trinniberg in the field at Pimlico, so it's unclear whether Bode will be able to establish such a menacing lead once again.
Daddy Nose Best
Much like I'll Have Another at the Kentucky Derby, Daddy Nose Best currently sits at 15-to-1. Maybe it's a sign, or maybe it's just me making something out of nothing.
But if you can learn to forgive this horse's performance at Churchill, where he finished 10th, you have yourself a bargain.
Daddy Nose Best got locked down in the middle of the pack and wasn't able to make a move, but at Pimlico it will be a much smaller field, which plays into the hands of jockey Garrett Gomez.
Additionally, Gomez has plenty of experience at the Preakness. Although he's never won it, he has finished in the top 10 three times.
Teeth of the Dog
This horse is easily the best bet of any of the newbies making their Triple Crown debut.
His last race was more than a month ago, but it came at the Grade-1 Wood Memorial, a race in which he finished third behind Kentucky Derby favorites Gemologist and Alpha.
Now, those horses ended up disappointing at Churchill, but it doesn't take away from the fact that Teeth of the Dog can compete with some of the better 3-year-olds in the world.
This 20-to-1 longshot will surprise some people on Saturday.
