2012 Preakness Post Positions: Under Armour CEO's Tiger Walk Isn't a Contender
Kevin Plank won’t protect his house.
The CEO of Under Armour isn’t just content with taking the clothing industry by storm. He wants to breed a Triple Crown-contending race horse as well. I wouldn’t doubt the successful Plank to pull it off in the future, but don’t bet money on his horse in this year’s 2012 Preakness Stakes.
The Boston Globe reported that Plank believes Sagamore Farms is a realistic breeding ground for the next Triple Crown winner. He said leading up to the Preakness:
"“I don't think there's anybody that owns the right. We haven't had a Triple Crown winner in 33 years. What other sport hasn't named a legitimate champion in 33 years? So that is far overdue, and no one in Kentucky has done it. These aren't God-given rights limited to growing up in Kentucky. Maryland has that kind of history with Man of War, War Admiral, Native Dancer. So why not us?”
"
According to AllHorseRacing.com, Tiger Walk, the horse that Plank entered in the Triple Crown’s second leg, currently holds 20/1 odds to win the Preakness. And those numbers are merciful.
According to Jeff Frank of The Sports Network, in the seven races that Tiger Walk participated in, he won just two of them. In two separate races, the horse lost by five lengths. And in another, he fell a whopping nine lengths behind the leader.
In Tiger Walk’s latest performance, he finished fourth, losing to Gemologist—a thoroughbred that couldn’t keep pace with Preakness favorites Bodemeister and I’ll Have Another in the Kentucky Derby.
Tiger Walk’s resume doesn’t exactly scream contender. While he boasts one of the best names in the Preakness field, he won’t come close to knocking off Bodemeister or I’ll Have Another on Saturday.
