Players Championship 2012: Rickie Fowler and Stars That Will Shine Sunday
With the 2012 Players Championship entering its final day, there are stars who are ready to shine bright Sunday afternoon.
Players such as Rickie Fowler and Phil Mickelson are bound to have stellar finishing rounds, which could put them in a position to steal the day. While it’s a long shot for some, it’s still a possibility.
All of the following stars will have a wonderful Sunday at TPC Sawgrass, but their finishing spots on the leaderboard will be determined by the players around them.
Rickie Fowler
Not only is the young Rickie Fowler riding the momentum of winning his first PGA tournament last week at the Wells Fargo Championship, but he is also riding the momentum of one of the greatest mustaches in history.
In all seriousness, there may be no player in the world hitting shots the way Fowler has been over the last month. While Kevin Na entered Sunday the leader, Fowler sits at nine-under coming in and looks to maintain his torrid pace.
If the charismatic star can keep up the solid play, there is no reason he can’t steal the lead and take home his second tournament in a row.
Bo Van Pelt
The ultimate sleeper for the 2012 Players championship has been Bo Van Pelt, and he is in the position to make that late-Sunday surge to the top of the leaderboard.
While Van Pelt is seven shots off of the lead, there is bound to be much turnover at the top of the score cards on Sunday. There is no reason Bo can’t shoot a great round and sneak into the top five when all is said and done.
Van Pelt has a solid record at TPC Sawgrass, and a win at the Player Championship would be another notch in the underrated golfer’s belt. Keep an eye on BVP as Sunday progresses.
Phil Mickelson
PGA veteran Phil Mickelson is no stranger to the stresses of Sundays, and he will take advantage of that experience at the Players Championship and TPC Sawgrass.
Mickelson has one victory on the season, but he has finished top-10 at the end of four of the 10 tournaments he has entered; that’s an impressive 2012 so far.
With Lefty tied for 14th at four-under, eight shots behind leader Kevin Na coming into Day 4, his chances are winning are slim. Mickelson will go out and shoot an amazing Sunday number and let the chips fall where they may, which will be a top-five finish.
