Georgia Football: Is Aaron Murray the Type of QB Who Can Lead UGA to a Title?
What makes a championship quarterback?
Most people would say a guy who has a strong arm, is very accurate and is a natural-born leader.
Georgia has had a few quarterbacks to come through the program who has had those abilities, but the Bulldogs have only one two consensus national titles in their history.
Which leads to this question: Is Aaron Murray the type of quarterback who can lead the Bulldogs to a national title.
He has the ability to make the Bulldogs a contender, but he has to take that next step in his progression in order for that to happen.
Here are some reasons as to why he could be that guy to take them to the promise land, and also, here's a few things he needs to improve on this season.
Reasons He Could Lead the Bulldogs to a Title
1 of 5Aaron Murray is considered by many as one of the best quarterbacks in the SEC. The reason for that is he has a strong arm and can move outside the pocket.
Throwing for over 3,000 yards and a school-record 35 touchdowns last year, ESPN and Phil Steele named Murray to the All-SEC First Team while the AP named him to the second team.
He's also considered an early Heisman candidate and is considered as one of the top 25 players in college football according to Sporting News.
So if Murray improves from last year and is one of the finalist for the Heisman, the Bulldogs should be in the title game.
Murray's Weaknesses
2 of 5As good Murray has been the last two years, there are some things he has to work on. The first thing he has to work on is his accuracy. Murray completed only 59 percent of his passes last year. Part of the reason for the low percentage is the offensive line was a work in progress at times, and the running game was not as consistent as the coaches wanted to be.
The other thing Murray has to work on is taking care of the football. Murray threw 14 interceptions last year which is six more than he threw in 2010. He also had some costly fumbles which changed to outcome of some big games such as South Carolina and LSU.
Getting Some Help
3 of 5Murray was the the team's offensive MVP last year because he was really the only player who was consistent. He has to play at a high level each game this year in order for the Bulldogs to have a chance to win a title, but the same can be said about the rest of his teammates.
The offensive line and running game has to be better. With the addition of OL John Theus and running backs Keith Marshall and Todd Gurley, the Bulldogs think they're much improved at both positions.
The defense was strong for the Bulldogs last year, but they have to have the same effort, if not a better effort, this year in order for Murray and company to take that next step. Murray is talented, but he can't do it all by himself.
The Schedule
4 of 5One of the things that could benefit Murray is the schedule because the Bulldogs are facing only one team that had over 10 wins last year (South Carolina). If Murray wants to be a better quarterback and help the Bulldogs win a national title, he has to pounce on teams like Buffalo, Florida Atlantic and Georgia Southern.
Murray also has to play well in the SEC games like Missouri, Florida and the only SEC team the Bulldogs loss to in the regular season—South Carolina. The Bulldogs won 10 straight games, and the schedule was a little tougher with Boise State to start the season. Murray has to get off on the right foot if they want a chance at the crystal ball.
Comparison to Other UGA Quarterbacks
5 of 5With the way Murray has been playing, he's being to compared to other successful quarterbacks like David Greene, Eric Zeier and Matthew Stafford.
All those quarterbacks are different in their own way, and they found success at Georgia in different ways. Murray does not have the arm like Stafford, is not as accurate as Greene or going to sling the football all over the field like Zeier. But Murray does a little bit of everything well, and that could be what gets him to the title game.
Murray can be accurate, can throw on the run and has a strong arm. If he can put it all together and get help from his teammates, he could be the first quarterback in 22 years to lead the Bulldogs to a national title.
