17 Ex-Montreal Canadiens Who Played in This Year's Playoffs
Isn't it weird seeing ex-players on your favorite team wear a different jersey?
Well, for the Montreal Canadiens' fans, there was a lot of that at this years' playoffs.
The Habs, of course, didn't make the playoffs after finishing last in the Eastern Conference. But 17 of their ex-players did.
So let's take a look at them.
Dainius Zubrus
1 of 17Dainius Zubrus played with the Habs from 1998-99 until 2000-01.
He appeared in a total of 139 games with the Canadiens, scoring 29 goals and adding 45 assists for a total of 74 points.
Zubrus went on to play in Washington and then Buffalo and now New Jersey.
The New Jersey Devils beat the Florida Panthers in seven games in the first round and then handled the Philadelphia Flyers in just six games, earning them a berth in the Conference finals against the New York Rangers. They met the Los Angeles Kings in the Stanley Cup Final. They are currently going into Game 6 on Monday night, with the Devils down 3-2 in the series.
Zubrus has played in all of the Devils 23 games so far and had scored three goals and seven assists for 10 points.
He's usually on one of the Devils' top two lines and is playing an important role each night, as a veteran presence.
Ryan McDonagh
2 of 17Ryan McDonagh was drafted by the Canadiens in 2007, and although he never played a game for Montreal, he was still a member of the franchise.
McDonagh was traded to the New York Rangers, along with Chris Higgins, Doug Janik and Pavel Valentenko for Scott Gomez, Tom Pyatt and Mike Busto in 2009.
McDonagh played 40 games for the Rangers the following season, then played a full 82 games this season.
The Rangers entered the playoffs as the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference. They beat the Ottawa Senators in seven games and then also beat the Washington Capitals in seven games in Round 2.
They met the New Jersey Devils in the Conference finals and eventually lost in six games. McDonagh finished with four assists in 20 games but was one of the most important players on the team, as he shut down the other teams' top players each night.
McDonagh was part of the Rangers' No. 1 shutdown role on the blue line, going against the other teams' top lines.
Kyle Chipchura
3 of 17Kyle Chipchura was drafted by the Habs in 2004 and played with them from 2007-08 until 2009-10.
He played a total of 68 games with the team, spending much of his time with the Hamilton Bulldogs. But with the Habs, Chipchura scored four goals and added 10 assists for 14 points.
Chipchura had a somewhat successful year with the Phoenix Coyotes this year. The Coyotes beat the Chicago Blackhawks in six games in the first round, then handled the Nashville Predators in five games to advance to the Conference finals. They eventually lost to the Los Angeles Kings in five games.
Chipchura played in 15 of Phoenix's 16 games in the playoffs, scoring one goal and adding three assists for four points in mostly a checking or fourth-line role. He was tied for second on the team with a plus-four rating.
Jeff Halpern
4 of 17Jeff Halpern had a short stint in Montreal, playing only the 2010-11 season with the team.
Halpern played in 72 games that year, scoring 11 goals and adding 15 assists for 26 points.
The centreman played this year with the Washington Capitals, who beat the Boston Bruins in the first round in seven games but then lost to the New York Rangers in seven games as well.
Halpern played two out of those 14 games with Washington and didn't get any points.
Roman Hamrlik
5 of 17Roman Hamrlik played with the Habs from 2007-08 until 2010-11.
He was a mainstay on the Habs blue line, playing in 312 of a possible 328 games during that time. He scored 22 goals and added 97 assists for 119 points.
This season, he also played with the Washington Capitals. Hamrlik appeared in all of Washington's 14 games, scoring one goal and adding three assists on the blue line. He also led the team with a plus-eight rating in those games.
Hal Gill
6 of 17Hal Gill played with the Habs from 2009-10 to 2011-12.
The 6'7" defenseman scored five goals and added 25 assists for 29 points in his 196 games with the Habs.
He blocked many more shots in those years than he scored points, just as he did with the Nashville Predators this season.
Nashville played the Detroit Red Wings in the first round this year, beating them in five games, but then, they met the Phoenix Coyotes in the second round, and Phoenix eliminated them in five games.
Gill was hurt for the start of the playoffs but played a total of five games, going scoreless. He didn't get any penalty minutes, but he blocked a lot of shots.
Francis Bouillon
7 of 17Francis Bouillon played with the Habs from 1999-2000 until 2001-02 and then again after a brief stint in Nashville for the 2002-03 season until 2008-09.
He played in a total of 475 games on the Habs blue line. The 5'8" defenseman scored 21 goals and 147 assists for 168 points.
Bouillon was also a member of the Nashville Predators this season. He finished the playoffs with no goals and three assists in Nashville's 10 games.
Andrei Kostitsyn
8 of 17Andrei Kostitsyn was a member of the Habs from 2005-06 until this year, 2011-12.
He played 379 games for the Habs over that time and scored 99 goals, while adding 111 assists for 210 points.
Kostitsyn played with Nashville in this year's playoffs, scoring three goals and adding one assist in eight playoff games.
He was suspended, along with Alexander Radulov, for a game (and sat out another) after the pair allegedly missed cerfew in this years' playoffs.
Sergei Kostitsyn
9 of 17Sergei Kostitsyn was drafted by the Habs and played with them 2007-08 to 2009-10.
The younger brother of Andrei, he scored 24 goals and added 44 assists for 68 points in 155 games with the Habs.
Kostitsyn was also a member of the Nashville Predators this season. He played in all 10 of Nashville's playoff games, scoring one goal and adding one assist.
Matt D'Agostini
10 of 17Matt D'Agostini played with the Habs from 2007-08 to 2009-10. He was drafted by the team in 2005 and eventually played his first game in 2007.
D'Agostini finished his Habs career with 14 goals and 11 assists for 25 points in 94 games.
He played with the St. Louis Blues this year, who beat San Jose Sharks in five games in the first round, but then lost to Los Angeles Kings in four straight in the second round.
D'Agostini played in four of those games, scoring one goal.
Jaroslav Halak
11 of 17Jaroslav Halak was a goaltender with the Canadiens from 2006-07 to 2009-10.
He finished with a record of 26-34-7 in 101 appearances.
Halak played this year with D'Agostini and the St. Louis Blues, who beat San Jose but lost to Los Angeles.
Halak finished the playoffs with a record of one win, one loss and one overtime loss. He was hurt in the first round, which limited his playing time.
Dominic Moore
12 of 17Dominic Moore played with the Habs in 2009-10.
In that one season, he played 21 games, scoring two goals and adding nine assists for 11 points.
This year's playoffs with the San Jose Sharks, who were beat out by the St. Louis Blues in five games, Moore did not score any points in the three games he played.
Chris Higgins
13 of 17Chris Higgins was a member of the Canadiens from 2003-04 until 2008-09.
He played in a total of 282 games with the Habs, notching 84 goals and 67 assists for a total of 151 points.
Higgins was a member of the Vancouver Canucks, as they entered the playoffs as the No. 1 seed in the West but were ousted by the Stanley Cup finalist Los Angeles Kings in five games.
Higgins went pointless in the five games with the Canucks in this year's playoffs.
Maxim Lapierre
14 of 17Maxim Lapierre played in Montreal from 2005-06 to 2010-11.
He played in 293 games with the Habs before being traded to Anaheim. Lapierre scored 40 goals and added 40 assists for 80 points during his time with the Canadiens.
This year, Lapierre was also a member of the Vancouver Canucks team as they lost to the Los Angeles Kings in the first round.
Lapierre didn't score any goals in this years playoffs but got one assist and 16 penalty minutes in five games with the Canucks.
Arron Asham
15 of 17Arron Asham played with Montreal from 1998-99 to 2001-02.
In 121 games with the Habs, the tough guy scored 11 goals and added nine assists for 20 points. He also accumulated 138 penalty minutes.
Asham played with the Pittsburgh Penguins in this years' playoffs. The Penguins lost in six games to the Philadelphia Flyers.
Asham played in three of those games, not scoring any points, but getting 10 penalty minutes and playing in a grinder-role for the Pens.
Benoit Pouliot
16 of 17Benoit Pouliot played with the Habs in 2009-10 and 2010-11.
He racked up 28 goals and 26 assists for 54 points in 108 games with the team.
Pouliot played with the Boston Bruins in the playoffs this year. The Bruins lost to the Washington Capitals in the first round, and Pouliot had one goal and one assist in seven games.
Jose Theodore
17 of 17Jose Theodore played goal for the Canadiens from 1995-2006. He had a record of 141-158-30 with the team.
In this year's playoffs, Theodore appeared in net for five games in the Florida Panthers' first-round series against the New Jersey Devils.
He went 2-2 with a 2.46 GAA, as he split time with Scott Clemmenson due to injury.
Theodore was in net when the Panthers lost to the Devils in double overtime in the seventh game.
