Players Championship 2012: Golf Stars Set Up for Big Moving Day

Steven CookJun 7, 2018

We've seen a thrilling first half of tournament action at THE PLAYERS championship at the TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., but it's just starting to get good.

No clear-cut leader has been determined through two rounds, but many contenders have emerged as a wide range of golfers are just a few strokes from pulling away with the tournament victory.

Zach Johnson hit a six-under 66 on Friday to notch himself near the top of the leader board, while 22-year-old youngster Harris English and Korean pro Kevin Na, among others, wait within striking distance.

Let's take a look at some star golfers who we could see make a surge to the final pairing on Saturday.

Lee Westwood

Westwood has been in this position many times before, and I'd be shocked if he didn't put himself in a position to win on Moving Day.

The world's third-ranked player has had a solid year despite not yet notching a win. He began the season with two fourth-place finishes at Ritz-Carlton and The Honda Classic, and he's got two consecutive top-five finishes at both The Masters and Quail Hollow.

Westwood has been due a statement win for some time, and he's hungry to get used to winning just in time for these stretch of majors.

Adam Scott

Scott hasn't met expectations this season, but it's only a matter of time until he breaks out. THE PLAYERS could be that chance for him.

He posted a stellar four-under score of 68 on Thursday and followed that up with a two-under 70 on Friday to sit at six-under, just a few strokes off the lead.

Now a chiseled golfing veteran, Scott is way overdue his first major. Having a big day Saturday and winning THE PLAYERS will help catapult him to do so this summer.

Phil Mickelson

We've seen Phil Mickelson's brilliance on Moving Day countless times, and we should be wowed in a similar fashion Saturday as Mickelson surges up the leaderboard.

He's began the tournament with two 71's to sit at two-under so he's quite a few strokes off the lead. But it's apparent that birdies aren't exactly at a premium on this course. It wouldn't surprise anybody if he were to get off to five straight birdies to begin his Moving Day and win his second PLAYERS tournament.
