Marc Bergevin and the Montreal Canadiens' Coaching Search: Call Me, Maybe?
The Montréal Canadiens are looking for a new head coach. Marc Bergevin was hired as the general manager of the Canadiens last week, and now it is his job to begin an interview process to look for his new bench boss.
As the Canadiens have been the most successful franchise in NHL history, many hockey people will naturally be interested in accepting a position with the team. However, everyone is wondering who will be contacted.
Carly Rae Jepsen says it best: "Call Me Maybe."
Let's take a look ...
No.8 Guy Carbonneau
1 of 8Guy Carbonneau, a former-Canadiens head coach, speaks French, and he knows all about the team. It is unknown at this point if Marc Bergevin will include former coaches on his interview list, but Carbonneau is available, if the situation is right.
It is also unknown if Carbonneau has interest in returning to the Canadiens after Bob Gainey told him to pack up and leave.
Carbonneau says "Call me maybe?"
No.7 Michel Therrien
2 of 8Michel Therrien is from Quebec, and he has experience coaching the Montreal Canadiens and Pittsburgh Penguins.
Currently, Therrien works for RDS, and he regularly makes appearances on a show called "L'antichambre," in which a group of veteran analysts sat down with Marc Bergevin and had a good discussion on the evening he was hired by Geoff Molson.
No.6 Patrick Roy
3 of 8If Patrick Roy is interested in leaving one of the most profitable junior hockey teams in Quebec with the Quebec Remparts, then the Canadiens management group of Serge Savard and Marc Bergevin would be welcoming Roy to Montreal for an interview.
For a media entertainment point of view, Roy will be a very interesting figure to listen to on the television or radio interviews. he is very animated, and the fans will love him.
It is uncertain if Bergevin have contacted Roy, but call him maybe?
No.5 Bob Hartley
4 of 8Bob Hartley is another candidate that the Canadiens may look to hire: He speaks decent French and has NHL coaching experience.
He is currently coaching in the Swiss league, but he could perhaps join the Canadiens on an out. He is also helping out with the Shawinigan Cataractes, who will host the Memorial Cup this month.
No.4 Larry Robinson
5 of 8Larry Robinson has been coaching the New Jersey Devils since 1993. He had been the head coach for the LA Kings and rejoined the New Jersey Devils once again to be an assistant.
The Hall of Fame defenseman prefers being the assistant coach rather than the head coach. In 2000, he took on the head coaching role for an ill Pat Burns. He managed to lead his team to the Finals, and he demoted himself back as an assistant.
The agent for Robinson has came out to say Robinson would be willing to listen to what the Canadiens have to say to him.
Call me, maybe?
No.3 Joel Quennville
6 of 8There are rumours recently about the Chicago Blackhawks coaching staff having conflicts.
Marc Haviland will not be returning to the team next year. If the Blackhawks end up firing their head coach, then the Canadiens will call him.
Joel Quennville speaks decent French, but he's not overly skilled.
No.2 Marc Crawford
7 of 8The Montreal Canadiens will be interviewing Marc Crawford, this we know. Crawford won the Stanley Cup once in Colorado, and the coach is able to speak some French, having a little coaching experience in Quebec in the past.
Right now, Crawford works for a TSN panel, and he will be one of the front-runners for the head coaching job.
No.1 Alain Vigneault
8 of 8Alain Vigneault's future remains uncertain with the Vancouver Canucks, and if it ever happens that the Canucks are changing coaches, then Marc Bergevin will be the first person to be call Vigneault, maybe.
The coach from Gatineau, Quebec, has won the Presidents' Trophy back-to-back years in Vancouver and has playoff experience, going to the Stanley Cup Finals last year.
Vigneault's having coached the Canadiens once already, the team may have to try very hard to convince him to come back and lead them again.
