4 Positions That Could Use Veteran Help

Zach LawJun 7, 2018

The Tennessee Titans aren't finished.

Once the main free agency period is over and the draft is over, it's not time for a team to stop improving the roster. There are hundreds of veteran free agents waiting for another shot. A lot are going to sign between now and opening day. Some will sign with the Titans.

Where are the positions and who are the candidates?

Center

Eugene Amano's walking around with a target on his back. He survived draft weekend, as the team only signed undrafted rookie William Vlachos. Fernando Velasco and Kevin Matthews are the backups, but if they were good enough to unseat Amano, wouldn't the team have tried them by now?

A bunch of veteran free-agent centers came to Nashville. Only Jeff Faine, formerly of the Tampa Bay Bucs, is unsigned.  The Titans could pick him up on the cheap if they deem him to be an upgrade to Amano.

Fullback

Ahmard Hall is gone. Hard to believe he lasted longer with the Titans than Vince Young, but it's true.

Last year's replacement during Hall's suspension was Quinn Johnson. The team released Johnson after Hall was reinstated, but he ended the season back on the roster. He's the prohibitive favorite.

A possible replacement and upgrade is Ovie Mughelli. The Atlanta Falcons released Mughelli this week according to ESPN. While the fullback position isn't a priority, signing a former Pro Bowl fullback to a one-year veteran minimum deal is a consideration.

Cornerback

The Titans have a lot of cornerbacks. This much is true. But it doesn't hurt to bring in a little veteran competition.

Just this week they've brought in Drayton Florence, Andre Goodman and Drew Coleman. None of these players are world beaters, but some additional depth heading into training camp wouldn't hurt.

Safety

A year ago, the Titans brought in Jordan Babineaux as a late-summer addition to be the veteran backup safety behind Chris Hope and Michael Griffin. Hope missed most of the season, and Babineaux signed an extension with the team.

This year, third-year player Robert Johnson and sixth-round rookie Markelle Martin are the two players slated to be backup safeties. There are still a lot of quality safeties on the market, including Nick Collins, Jim Leonhard, Yeremiah Bell and O.J. Atogwe.

All four of those players were opening day 2011 starters and may want another shot to start, which won't happen with the Titans.
