TPC 2012: Zach Johnson and Best Longshots to Bet on at Sawgrass

Tim KeeneyJun 7, 2018

The Players Championship at Sawgrass be recognized as the fifth major because of the amount of stars who participate, but lately it's been the opposite of stars winning the prestigious tournament.

Just look at who's won it the last few years:

K.J. Choi, Tim Clark, Henrik Stenson, Sergio Garcia, Phil Mickelson, Stephen Ames, Fred Funk, and Adam Scott.

Yikes.

Nonetheless, all that means is that if history is going to repeat itself again in 2012, you'd be smart to bet on a longshot. So, let's take a look at the underrated golfers who you should pay attention to.

Zach Johnson (50/1)

Z-John has been streaky in 2012, and that streakiness took a turn for the worse last week at the Wells Fargo Championship when he finished tied for 69th. Nonetheless, he's still made all 11 cuts and has finished in the Top 25 five times.

Even if he doesn't have the prettiest game, there is a good chance he'll be at least within striking distance come the weekend.

He's historically solid at Sawgrass and finished tied for 12th last year at TPC. At 50/1 that's a solid bet.

Ryan Moore (60/1)

The 30-year-old only has one career PGA victory, but he's quietly putting together a very solid season. In his last four tournaments, in particular, he's been extremely hot, finishing Top 10 in three of them.

Of course those three fantastic finishes are sandwiching an 88th place finish at the Shell Houston, but he's playing his best golf nonetheless.

In case you were wondering, he's made the cut every time he's played at TPC, so he has the experience necessary to pull an upset. Moore will need some breaks to roll his way, but he has the potential to make you a lot of money.

Rickie Fowler (40/1)

At the very worst, you're betting on a guy with a mustache that rivals that of Adam Morrison's, so you can't really go wrong.

At the best, Fowler, who enters TPC with tons of momentum, will provide great value.

Fowler, who has three Top 10 finishes in 2012, capped off his rise to prominence last week when he won the Wells Fargo Championship. Not only did he win, but he beat world No. 1 Rory McIlroy in a playoff.

That's a guy I'm willing to bet on.
