Floyd Mayweather: Freddie Roach's Perception of Money and Super-Fight Is Spot On
After a brutal fight against Miguel Cotto, Floyd Mayweather once again walked out of Las Vegas with his perfect record intact.
While many praised the fight as one of Mayweather’s best performances, fellow boxing star Manny Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach was far from impressed. As a matter of fact, he feels Cotto created the template to beat Money.
Roach watched as his man handled Cotto in a more efficient way than Mayweather did and realizes that Pacquiao has the advantages to make sure he wins the fight.
Roach told Yahoo! Sports about whether or not he believes his fighter could beat Mayweather:
"Would Manny beat Floyd? You bet. The way to beat Floyd to outwork him every minute of every round. Manny is the only one capable of executing that game plan. Activity kills Mayweather. You need to stay busy against him and not let him dictate the pace by slowing down the fight. Southpaws are his other weakness. Manny is just a bad combination for Floyd to fight. If it would bring Floyd into the ring, I'd agree to have Manny fight him right handed.
"
While there is no way that Manny and Roach would really agree to fight Floyd right-handed, the confidence from their camp has been there since Day 1. That’s because they need this super-fight to happen more than Mayweather’s camp does.
If both men retired today, Mayweather would be recognized as the better career fighter because of his undefeated streak and the more illustrious wins. While both fighters will be held in high regard, Mayweather has to be ranked ahead of Pac-Man.
That’s why Pacquiao wants to fight Mayweather; it’s the brawler’s only chance at becoming the greatest of all time. If Manny beats Floyd and takes his streak, that would catapult the Philippine star ahead of Money in the record books.
While he may not agree or admit to it, Mayweather knows this is true as well and may be holding the fight hostage because he knows he will never do it. The risk in Mayweather’s head is too much for the reward.
The hope from fans is that pride catches up with Money and he agrees. Then we will see who was right about the winner.
