Floyd Mayweather vs. Miguel Cotto: Ranking Best Options for Junito's Next Fight

Timothy RappJun 7, 2018

We all know whom the public is hoping, praying, dying for Floyd Mayweather to fight in his next bout.

But what about Miguel Cotto? Who will Junito, so impressive even in defeat against Mayweather, look to fight next?

Let's rank several options for Mr. Cotto moving forward.

3. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. or Sergio Martinez

Both are intriguing opponents for Cotto. Well, if they don't end up fighting each other, that is.

Two of the top fighters in the middleweight division, Chavez and Martinez would each be interesting adversaries to Cotto for more in-tune boxing fans, but neither would bring the sort of mass appeal Cotto is probably hoping for in his next fight.

Chalk these two up as worthy but just below upper-echelon options for Cotto.

2. Saul "Canelo" Alvarez

This is the fight I'd most like to see. Alvarez is one of the sport's young stars, and a bout between he and Cotto would surely be dubbed as a clash of tomorrow versus yesterday.

As Cotto proved against Mayweather, he's still one of the elite fighters in boxing today.

But Alvarez was impressive in his victory over Shane Mosley, dismantling the veteran fighter, and he may hold his own against Cotto.

And if nothing else, the promoters would spin this as a boxing war between Mexico and Puerto Rico, always sure to get the juices flowing from each side's supporters.

This one could be a truly epic clash, and of all the possible opponents for Cotto, this is the one I want most. But it probably isn't the one Cotto wants the most if he can schedule a fight with the last guy listed.

In every aspect, this is the best option for Cotto. He'll get a shot at a rematch, it will keep his name in the national consciousness and it will net him a bigger payday than any of the other fights listed here.

It was an entertaining enough fight that I think a rematch remains a possibility, especially if a more logical fighter doesn't appear on Mayweather's radar and a Manny Pacquiao fight remains off the table.

Don't be shocked if these two touch gloves again.
