Mayweather vs. Pacquiao: Why Super-Fight Is Becoming Less Appealing for Fans
For so long, boxing fans—and really just anyone in particular—have been under the impression that the only fight worth hoping for is Manny Pacquiao versus Floyd Mayweather. Soon, that notion may be wrong.
At this point, claiming for such a fight has just become an automatic response.
"Hey, who do you most want to see fight?"
"Oh, no question it's Manny Pacquiao versus Floyd Mayweather."
"That's nice, but we were talking about UFC."
Mayweather vs. Pacquiao has become a legend of sorts. Something people want to see it because they can't have it. It doesn't even necessarily represent the best available fight out there, but wanting it is the cool thing to do.
In the next coming months, however, don't be surprised if the appeal of this fight (finally) starts wearing off. It won't completely lose its appeal (heck, it's Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, after all), but many factors should make it lose steam.
Hopefully.
First of all, Mayweather's fight on Saturday against Miguel Cotto was arguably the best so far this year. Cotto came after Money with aggression and actually somewhat broke down his all-world defense.
Money eventually came out on top via unanimous decision, but Cotto proved that someone besides Pacquiao can give Mayweather a run for his "money," if you will.
If Timothy Bradley gives Pacquiao an exciting fight, then all of a sudden people will start thinking, "hey, these guys can actually put on good shows against other people."
With stars such as Canelo Alvarez, Bradley, Amir Khan and Lamont Peterson bursting onto the scene and making for good opponents, this becomes even more the case.
What's more, remember that the reasons for Mayweather and Pacquiao not fighting are absolutely silly reasons. Random drug testing and a 51-49 split versus 50-50 split?
Come on.
If they keep putting off a super-fight because of seemingly ridiculous issues, it's going to start getting annoying. You know, assuming you aren't already annoyed by it.
Mayweather and Pacquiao would put on a show and would put to rest endless debates about who's better, there's no doubt about it. But at some point, the novelty of begging for such as fight has to wear off.
At some point, the appeal of this super-fight has to wear off and people have to move on. At the very least, it's time to stop hoping for a pipe dream, and if a deal for a fight ever gets done, we'll all be presently surprised.
Win-win.
I know I'm done holding out for this fight. I know I've moved on. There are better, more realistic fights available out there. Who's with me?
Crickets.
