NBA Draft 2012: Biggest Needs for Lottery Teams

Wes ODonnellJun 7, 2018

Each team in the lottery has terribly dire needs—they wouldn't be in the lottery if they didn't.

The NBA draft gives them the first chance at filling those needs, but the worst team isn't guaranteed the No. 1 pick. The majority of these teams have more than one need, and in the 2012 draft there are a number of players who can help these teams for the now and the later.

Here's a look at some of the biggest holes on some of the league's worst teams.

Bobcats

Biggest Need: Everything—Best Player Available

The Bobcats would love to have the No. 1 pick as Anthony Davis is perfect for them, but they have so many holes they'll still find a player they need regardless of when they pick.

Even after landing two picks the early portion of the draft a year ago, this team wasn't able to put things together and won 13 less games than the league's second worst team.

They are very bad and a ton of needs.

Davis is the ideal fit, but they can't go wrong with the likes of Thomas Robinson of Kansas or Bradley Beal of Florida. Even Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, whose lack of a consistent perimeter game concerns some teams, would help them immediately as well.

Kings

Biggest Need: Big Man

There is nothing more pressing in Sacramento than pairing up an athletic big man with DeMarcus Cousins. More than that, an athletic big who can contribute immediately.

Thomas Robinson is the ideal fit, but unless they land a top three or four pick they won't get a shot at him.

That leaves Ohio State's Jared Sullinger as the likeliest option.

His lack of upside may cause them to look elsewhere though, putting players like Harrison Barnes and Bradley Beal (if he falls) in play.

Hornets

Biggest Need: Athletes with Upside

They know they have something potentially great in Eric Gordon, but with two lottery selections they need to boost the athleticism on this team and hope they can net two future superstars.

New Orleans isn't close to competing, so they have the opportunity to take a chance on athletic players with elite upside—players like Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Andre Drummond of Connecticut, Perry Jones of Baylor and Austin Rivers of Duke.

They could also look into guys like John Henson, Kendall Marshall and Damian Lillard.

Expect this team to come out of this draft significantly better than when they went in.

Raptors

Biggest Need: Perimeter Shooter or an Athletic Big

Toronto would love to see Bradley Beal fall to them, but they can't guarantee that'll happen. A point guard like Kendall Marshall would work for them as well, or they could jump on another athletic big.

With former No. 1 pick Andrea Bargnani still playing well, and last year's first round pick Jonas Valanciunas expected to come over, they could boast a talented, athletic front court if they drafted someone like Drummond or Davis—if they somehow land the first pick.

But again, Beal is the best option for them.

Wizards

Biggest Need: Complement Guard to John Wall

With Nick Young now gone to LA forever, where he belongs, the Wizards would be wise to land a athletic running mate for Wall to grow with.

Beal is the obvious choice, as his impressive perimeter game and overall potential make him a likely superstar in this league.

Kidd-Gilchrist is an option, as is Robinson, but they would join crowded positions in which the Wizards just used picks on last year.

Beal, however, is an immediate starter. If they land the No. 1 pick they will take Davis.
