5 of the Most over-Exaggerated MLB Announcer Calls of All Time

Rick WeinerJun 7, 2018

Believe it or not, baseball announcers are artists.

Instead of painting a picture with a brush, as you'd imagine a traditional artist to do, announcers use their voices to paint a picture, to capture a moment in time.

Sometimes, their emotions can get the better of them, resulting in some over-the-top calls that stand the test of time.

With this past weekend marking the anniversary of one such call, let's take a look at five of the most over-the-top, memorable calls that have passed through our ears and withstood the test of time.

Oh My...

During the seventh-inning stretch of a game between the Seattle Mariners and New York Yankees on May 5, 2007, Roger Clemens made his presence known.

Sitting in Yankees owner George Steinbrenner's luxury box, Clemens announced that he was returning to the Bronx and would once again pitch for the Yankees.

Suzyn Waldman, who people either love or loathe (there's no middle ground), couldn't contain herself as she broadcast the game along with John Sterling on WCBS 880 AM.

You can see Clemens make his announcement here.

With the game tied at four in the bottom of the 11th inning, the Seattle Mariners sent the bottom two-thirds of their lineup to the plate against Boston Red Sox reliever Curtis Leskanic in a 2004 battle between two teams headed in opposite directions.

Leskanic allowed a single to C Miguel Olivo, walked 1B John Hansen and the best player on the Mariners, RF Ichiro Suzuki, would lay down a sacrifice bunt advancing the runners into scoring position.

Boston would intentionally walk CF Randy Winn to get to 2B Bret Boone, who as Mariners' announcer Dave Niehaus exults, comes through in the clutch.

Don't Forget to Stretch

Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Mark Buehrle wasn't considered much of a hitting threat when he stepped to the plate against Braden Looper and the Milwaukee Brewers in the rubber game of the interleague series between the two teams.

Trailing 1-0 in the top of the third inning, Buehrle worked the count to two-and-two. Looper's eighth pitch made it into the seats in right-center, with some help from White Sox announcer Ken "Hawk" Harrelson.

A decade later, we got the Sterling Shake.

Words can't do this one justice, so take a look for yourself.
