Mayweather vs. Cotto Results: Pretty Boy Floyd Needs to Challenge Saul Alvarez
As soon as Floyd Mayweather's fight with Miguel Cotto ended and he was declared the winner via unanimous decision, all the speculation about his next opponent began. Despite the desire for a super-fight with Manny Pacquiao, Money's challenger was actually in the semi-main event of Saturday's show.
Saul Alvarez is not yet a superstar at the level of Mayweather or Pacquiao—who really is?—but he is putting together quite the impressive resume, and at just 25 years old, has a long, prosperous career ahead of him.
Golden Boy Promotions, which represents both Mayweather and Alvarez, made the strategic move to place the new kid on the same show as the golden goose to get as many eyes as possible on him and get people talking.
Sure, Alvarez was handed a cupcake in the over-the-hill Shane Mosley, but he would hardly be the first fighter in the world to get a mega-fight after getting an easy win over someone who was clearly not in their league; Timothy Bradley can attest to that fact.
With Alvarez possibly going against Mayweather, Golden Boy would get be in a win-win position. Not only would its biggest drawing card be fighting again, possibly this year if it happens, but Alvarez will be an even bigger star coming out than he was going in.
Regardless of whether he wins or loses the fight, Alvarez would always have the distinction of saying that he was in the main event of a show with Floyd Mayweather. Given the way Pretty Boy Floyd looked against Cotto, Alvarez would be able to handle his own in a fight.
Boxing has had a big problem creating stars. It was only by a miracle that the sport lucked into Mayweather and Pacquaio, but even beyond those two, the sport does not register on a national level. The heavyweight division, which used to be the crown jewel of all sports, might as well not exist.
Alvarez has the charisma and personality to be a superstar. Putting him in a match with Mayweather and letting him study the way that fights get promoted from the best in the world would be great for his future drawing power.
Mayweather would be doing himself, his promotion company and the sport of boxing a service by challenging Alvarez with his next fight, whenever that may be.
