English Premier League Power Rankings: Week 37

Joe TanseyMay 6, 2012

This weekend, the Premier League saw nothing get decided and had everything come down to the last day of the season.

The title race saw both Manchester City and Manchester United win and City stay atop the table on goal difference.

In the race for the European spots, Arsenal slipped up against Norwich and only managed one point, while both Tottenham and Newcastle could not fully take advantage of the Gunners' slip-up.

The relegation race began to take more shape, as QPR took the leader's seat in staying in the Premier League with a win, while Bolton could only manage a draw.

As always, last week's ranking is in parentheses.

20. Wolverhampton (20)

1 of 20

Wolves' home finale in the Premier League was a lackluster one, as they drew with Everton, 0-0.

A week after unleashing four goals on Swansea, Terry Connor's club could not muster a single shot on goal on Sunday.

The final game for Wolves in the top flight until at least August 2013 comes on Sunday at Wigan, who are still fighting for survival.

19. Blackburn (18)

2 of 20

Blackburn Rovers sat at home over the weekend and watched their chances of survival become even more bleak.

The club have to win their final two games, Monday versus Wigan at home and Sunday at Chelsea, to even have a chance of staying up.

Even if they win both games, Rovers could still be relegated if both QPR and Bolton get wins on Survival Sunday.

18. Aston Villa (19)

3 of 20

Aston Villa secured another season in the Premier League with a 1-1 draw at home against Tottenham on Sunday.

Ciaran Clark scored the opening goal for the Villains in the 35th minute before Spurs equalized through a penalty in the second half.

The Villains are not safe based on their point total (38), but on their substantial goal difference that they have over relegation fighters QPR, Wigan and Bolton, who could all potentially finish with the same number of points as Villa.

17. Bolton (15)

4 of 20

Bolton let a two-goal lead slip away in the final 15 minutes of their match with West Brom on Sunday.

The 2-2 draw could eventually mean that the Trotters will be sent packing to the Championship, as they need a win and some help on Sunday to stay in the Premier League.

Owen Coyle and company will face a tough task on Sunday to earn all three points, as they will have to visit Stoke at the Britannia Stadium.

16. Norwich City (17)

5 of 20

Norwich ended their three-game losing streak in London on Saturday with a 3-3 draw at the Emirates Stadium with Arsenal.

Steve Morison's goal in the 85th minute gave the Canaries a much-needed point at a time of the season when they were struggling.

The draw came almost a month after the club's last venture into North London, which ended up in a win over Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

Paul Lambert and company will end their Premier League season on Sunday at home against Aston Villa.

15. Wigan (14)

6 of 20

Wigan will look to clinch survival in the Premier League before Survival Sunday.

With a win over Blackburn on Monday, the Latics would reach 40 points and escape the relegation race for yet another season.

If they fail to beat Blackburn, the Latics will have another chance to win and stay up on Sunday as Wolves come to visit the DW Stadium.

14. Queens Park Rangers (16)

7 of 20

Djibril Cisse played the role of hero at Loftus Road on Sunday, as he scored in the 89th minute against Stoke to win the match, 1-0, for QPR.

Cisse's winner, along with the misfortune that Bolton experienced on Sunday, gave the R's more hope to stay afloat in the Premier League for another season.

However, there is a catch: If QPR want to control their own destiny on Survival Sunday, they will have to take points away from manager Mark Hughes' former club, Manchester City, at the Etihad Stadium.

13. Stoke City (12)

8 of 20

Stoke fell for the second time this season at the hands of QPR.

Sunday's match at Loftus Road was especially brutal for the Potters, as they let in an 89th-minute goal to seal their fate in the 1-0 loss.

After a long, strenuous season that included Europa League play, the Potters will cap off the 2011-12 season at home on Sunday against Bolton.

12. Sunderland (11)

9 of 20

Sunderland's winless streak was extended to seven games on Sunday with a 2-1 loss to Fulham.

Phil Bardsley equalized the match in the 34th minute before the Black Cats fell behind a minute later.

Martin O'Neill has not seen his club win since March 24 at home against QPR, and they will look to end the season with a bang by upsetting Manchester United at home on Sunday.

11. West Brom (13)

10 of 20

West Brom rallied back from a two-goal deficit to force a 2-2 draw with Bolton on the road at the Reebok Stadium.

Chris Brunt scored in the 75th minute for the Baggies before James Morrison scored the equalizer in the 90th minute.

The draw came after Roy Hodgson was named England manager, and many people thought that there would be no fight in a club that already lost its manager to another job, but that was not the case.

Hodgson will manage his last game at the club on Sunday at The Hawthorns as the Baggies host Arsenal.

10. Swansea City (8)

11 of 20

Swansea played in an uneventful 2-0 loss to Manchester United on Sunday at Old Trafford.

The Swans could barely muster anything on goal all day, as their opponents were trying desperately to score on keeper Michel Vorm.

Brendan Rodgers will now look to lead his club to a finish in the top half of the table, which they can achieve with a win over Liverpool at home on Sunday and a loss from West Brom and Sunderland.

9. Fulham (8)

12 of 20

Five days after recording their first-ever win at Anfield over Liverpool, Fulham won, 2-1, over Sunderland at home.

The crowd at Craven Cottage were treated to Clint Dempsey's 50th career Premier League goal to open the scoring in the 12th minute.

Moussa Dembele scored the winner for the Cottagers in the 35th minute to seal the fifth victory in seven games for Martin Jol's club.

8. Tottenham (9)

13 of 20

Tottenham were able to stay in the race for fourth place this week by earning four points.

On Wednesday, Spurs took care of business on the road with a 4-1 win over Bolton that saw a double from Emmanuel Adebayor.

Adebayor scored the only Spurs goal on Sunday, as he netted home a 62nd-minute penalty to give his club a 1-1 draw with Aston Villa.

Spurs now need a win over Fulham at home on Sunday to clinch at least fourth place; they could finish in third if Arsenal slip up against West Brom.

7. Liverpool (7)

14 of 20

Liverpool were unable to win their second cup of the season, as they lost, 2-1, to Chelsea in the FA Cup Final at Wembley on Saturday.

Andy Carroll scored in the 64th minute to spark what could have been a comeback, but the Reds fell short in their quest for their second trophy of the season after winning the Carling Cup over Cardiff in February.

The Reds will face Chelsea again on Tuesday, this time at Anfield in league play, before finishing off their season in Wales on Sunday as they visit Swansea.

6. Newcastle United (6)

15 of 20

Newcastle were unable to break Manchester City's recent run of form on Sunday, as they lost, 2-0, to the league leaders.

This past week was not all a failure, however, as the club knocked Chelsea out of the race for fourth place, beating the London club, 2-0, on Wednesday.

With one game left, a road game at Everton on Sunday, the Magpies sit in fifth place and need to win and have Arsenal and Tottenham both lose to earn the vital third-place spot that could be the final Champions League bid.

5. Arsenal (5)

16 of 20

Arsenal recorded their third straight draw on Saturday as they were held, 3-3, by Norwich at home.

All seemed to be well after Robin van Persie scored twice in the second half, but the visitors equalized late and left the Gunners with the threat of missing out on next year's Champions League.

The formula is simple for Arsene Wenger and the Gunners: Win against West Brom on Sunday at The Hawthorns and you have third place; lose or draw and you will need some help from Fulham and Everton to keep the place in the standings.

4. Everton (4)

17 of 20

Everton's unbeaten streak was extended to eight with a 0-0 draw at Wolves on Sunday.

The goal-less effort was nothing like the three straight four-goal games that the Toffees put together during April, but it still earned the club a point.

That point was crucial in the race to finish above Liverpool, who are four points back with two games left and could see their Merseyside rival Everton finish above them for the first time in quite a while.

3. Manchester United (3)

18 of 20

Manchester United kept pace with league leaders Manchester City as they beat Swansea, 2-0, at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Paul Scholes and Ashley Young were the goal scorers for the second-place club, who are still behind City on goal difference.

Going into the final day of the season at the Stadium of Light against Sunderland, United need a win and to either outscore City by nine or have City lose or draw with QPR in order to clinch their second straight Premier League title.

2. Chelsea (2)

19 of 20

Chelsea took home their fourth FA Cup in six years with a 2-1 win over Liverpool at Wembley on Saturday.

Didier Drogba scored in his record fourth FA Cup Final in the 52nd minute, while Ramires opened the scoring in the 11th minute for the Blues.

The Blues will finish up their Premier League campaign with two games this week, one on Tuesday against Liverpool at Anfield and one on Sunday as they host Blackburn at Stamford Bridge.

1. Manchester City (1)

20 of 20

Manchester City were powered by a pair of Yaya Toure goals to beat Newcastle, 2-0, on Sunday.

The Ivorian scored in the 70th and 89th minutes to give City the win.

Roberto Mancini and company are now one win away from taking their first Premier League title.

All that stands between City and their trophy is a home match with QPR on Sunday at the Etihad Stadium.
