Mayweather vs. Cotto 2012: What We Learned About Money in His Latest Win

Richard LangfordJun 7, 2018

We learned a lot about Floyd Mayweather as he battled out a convincing unanimous decision victory over Miguel Cotto at the MGM Grand on Saturday night.

Two judges gave Mayweather a 117-111 edge on their cards and the other had it 118-110.

It was a fun fight that saw Mayweather face, what many felt, was the toughest challenge of his professional career. In fact, Money himself seems to feel that way. ESPN's Dan Rafael offered us this post-fight quote from Money to his adversary:

You're the toughest guy I ever fought.

So it is not surprising that this fight revealed a few things about Money.

He Is as Good as Ever

At 35, Money is at the age when you expect boxers to begin showing serious signs of aging. However, Floyd is beating Father Time like he beats his opponents.

He looked as quick, fast and powerful as ever. He was light on his feet and quick in his reactions. And his combinations seemed to carry more pop then ever before.

While Floyd looked fantastic his last time in the ring, that fight ended after Victor Ortiz tried to turn it into a hug-fest in the fourth round, and in doing so, it gave us all just a little sample size of Mayweather's skills.

This fight he proved he could maintain his level for a full 12 rounds.

Not Afraid to Get Bloody

Floyd took a couple of good blows in this fight. Enough, in fact, that it even found the champ losing a little blood from his nose.

This is truly a rare sight for the elusive champ. I don't think anyone expected Floyd to pass out at the sight of his own blood or anything, but what was impressive was that he showed he could take some big blows and not lose track of his game plan.

Mayweather did not get phased or rattled for one instant in this fight. He kept his focus on his plan of attack and he was able to execute it.

He Will Beat Manny Pacquiao

This is assuming the fight ever happens, and who knows if that day will ever come. If it does, and it comes soon enough that both fighters can fight without using a walker, then Money will win.

Miguel Cotto fights a similar style to Manny Pacquiao. He is a big hitter that likes to go toe-to-toe. For the most part, Floyd was able to avoid these blows, and pick Cotto apart with his counterpunching.

And this has proven to be Pac-Man's true weakness: dealing with counterpunches (see his three Marquez fights).

Floyd would dodge Manny's power punches, and pick him apart with his counterpunching, ending up victorious on the scorecards.
