Kentucky Derby 2012 Results: Bodemeister and Horses Ready to Dominate Preakness
I'll Have Another pulled off a great win at the Kentucky Derby, but I'm expecting some other horses to steal his thunder at the Preakness Stakes.
Winning jockey Mario Gutierrez and his horse claimed the Derby crown behind a thrilling late surge. However, they won't be as fortunate in the shorter Preakness.
The Preakness is just a 1 3/16 miles long, which gives a major advantage to horses that explode out of the gate. That's why I'm expecting these three horses to spoil I'll Have Another's Triple Crown bid.
Bodemeister
The Derby favorite, Bodemeister looked like he was going to cruise to an easy victory until he got winded down the stretch.
In a performance that was reminiscent of his Arkansas Derby win, in which he led every length, Bodemeister busted out of the gate. He ran the first quarter-mile in a ridiculous 22.32 seconds, blowing away the rest of the competition.
Unfortunately, he couldn't sustain his speed for the entire race. Look for him to rebound by having a strong showing at the Preakness.
Went the Day Well
If not for a lousy start, Went the Day Well would have been neck and neck with the leaders down the stretch.
Despite sputtering out of the gates, he surged late to finish fourth. If he makes some improvements in his start, he will be a top contender at the Preakness.
Creative Cause
Creative Cause had 11-1 odds going into the Derby, and he didn't disappoint, finishing fifth.
At the Preakness, I'm expecting him to be in contention for the title. With a good young jockey in Joel Rosario, look for Creative Cause to finish in the top three or four.
