Floyd Mayweather: Breaking Down the Best and the Worst of His Night

Timothy RappMay 6, 2012

Put another check in the win column—Floyd Mayweather is 43-0.

Mayweather handled his business against Miguel Cotto, winning a unanimous decision (118-110, 117-111, 117-111). Cotto was no pushover, battling Mayweather in admirable fashion. But in the end,  Mayweather simply outboxed his opponent.

Let's take a look back at some of Money May's finest and worst moments of the night.

BEST

Round 4

Mayweather looked comfortable in the first three rounds, gamely handling Cotto's strategy of pushing him against the ropes and battering him. Mayweather coolly worked his way out of any trouble, taking the early rounds.

And in Round 4, he asserted himself, remaining in the center of the ring and doing damage to Cotto. It was his most dominant early round, though to his credit Cotto did bloody Mayweather's nose.

Round 7

After Cotto seemed to be regaining momentum in the fifth and sixth rounds, Mayweather stymied the attack, again out-boxing Cotto and taking the fight back into his control. While it was a close round, Mayweather's increased aggression gave him this round.

And perhaps kept Cotto from gaining more traction in this fight.

Round 12

Mayweather had long won the fight by this point, but he put an exclamation point on it in Round 12, unleashing a flurry of punches at Cotto to finish strong. Cotto was sent reeling in this round.

This was perhaps Mayweather's best round, a testament to how strong he is as a fighter. Cotto was a resilient opponent, but he's still not on the same level as Mayweather.

WORST

Round 8

Depending on whom you talk to or what you read, Mayweather took this fight anywhere from 119-109 all the way down to 116-112. But the one round Cotto clearly stole was the eighth.

Despite Mayweather landing a big shot early, Cotto kept Mayweather on the ropes, working the body and winning the round with a strong, late flurry. Mayweather was never in severe trouble, but this round served as notice that Cotto would be remaining strong in this fight.

And strong he remained, though Mayweather closed in style, leaving little doubt who was superior in this one.
