Mayweather vs. Cotto Results: Saul Alvarez Should Be Money May's Next Opponent
Last night, Floyd Mayweather kept his undefeated streak alive by defeating Miguel Cotto, and now all the talk will center around who Money May goes up against next. While the talks of Manny Pacquiao will certainly stir back up, Saul Alvarez is the more likely and the best opponent for the controversial boxer right now.
While Pacquiao is the fighter we all want to see go up against Mayweather, that fight is going to continue to be a "what if" scenario in boxing fans' heads, while Alvarez versus Money is logical and could be entertaining in its own right.
Last month in an interview with boxingfixtures.com, Alvarez talked about the Mayweather fight rumors that were already swirling before his bout with Shane Mosley:
""Floyd is Mayweather, he's on the throne. He's pound for pound the best fighter in the world and all we have to do is keep working hard, keep winning our fights and that is my goal-to fight the best fighters in the world, but one at a time."
"
Defeating a fighter of Mosley's caliber—even this late in his career—is impressive and certainly goes in the "keep winning fights" category. Mayweather can be arrogant, but he's no fool when it comes to the business side of boxing, and he wanted to be on the card the night "Canelo" Alvarez showed off his abilities in the U.S. for the first time.
After the fight, a defeated Mosley told SI.com that he believes his opponent "Can go a long ways," claiming he "Made sure [Alvarez] was worthy of becoming one of the next kings of the ring."
Mosley has been in the boxing business a long time, and from his words with Sports Illustrated, it looks like the veteran fighter sees a bright and possibly Mayweather-filled future for the 22-year-old.
Alvarez is the youngest champion in boxing right now, and his main-event status just took a few huge leaps forward after defeating Mosley in what could be the veteran's last fight. All this paired with a future bout against the Mexico native must be giving Money May thoughts of truckloads of dollar bills rolling up to his mansion.
