Kentucky Derby Results: Projecting in-the-Money Finishers for Preakness
2012 Kentucky Derby winner I'll Have Another is not going to be a factor at the Preakness Stakes.
At a mile-and-three-sixteenths, the Preakness is a shorter race, and I'll Have Another ran to victory by making a late charge and passing Bodemeister on the homestretch.
It was pretty clear that I'll Have Another is a strong horse with great stamina, but does not have the speed of some of the other horses. This will leave him out of the money for the Preakness.
Here are the horses who will finish in the top three—assuming they have no setbacks and are in the field, which is likely. Also, check out the unofficial results below.
Bodemeister
Bodemeister was as impressive as a horse could be in finishing second. He charged out to an early lead, and held on almost the entire race.
And his speed was apparent.
Bodemeister turned in the fastest times in the first five splits in the history of the race. Despite this blistering early pace, he was still able to hold on to second place.
With the shorter race up next, Bodemeister is in prime position to take a victory. He has the speed to emerge victorious.
Dullahan
Like I'll Have Another, Dullahan made a nice late charge, but there were slight differences. Dullahan had a hard time navigating the huge pack of the Derby at the beginning.
This left him boxed in, and with lots of sand flying in his face. He never looked comfortable in the early stages. Once he found some space and his rhythm, he started shining.
His speed was apparent, and it will shine in the Preakness. There will be a smaller field at the Preakness and the traffic will be much easier to navigate. Combine that with the shorter distance of this race, and Dullahan should be right at home.
Went the Day Well
Just as impressive as Dullahan was Went the Day Well. He ended finishing in fourth, and that was a remarkable finish considering how the early stages of this race went for the horse.
He got cut off on two separate occasions. This cost him not only track position, but speed. Went the Day Well was not fazed. He just kept on working and chugging along. And once he was able to find some space, he looked as fast as any horse on the track.
This is horse that is ready to contend for a major victory.
