Kentucky Derby Results: I'll Have Another Has Speed to Complete Triple Crown
Bodemeister had the Kentucky Derby in the bag with 100 yards left. Then I'll Have Another showed up to the party.
The horse came out of nowhere at Churchill Downs on Saturday to surpass the odds-on favorite down the stretch and became the first-ever winner from the No. 19 post position. I'll Have Another's win epitomized the theme of this year's race, which didn't boast a clear-cut favorite: Any horse could win it, and any horse did.
Bodemeister's speed was a force to behold—he had a five-length lead toward the end—but I'll Have Another ended up being the unlikely horse to out-do the favorite's blazing speed, gaining on a flagging Bodemeister little by little and taking the crown. You can see the complete results below and the list of payouts here.
After seeing that kind of speed, it's hard to believe he won't be even more electrifying at the shorter Preakness in Baltimore, Md.
A Triple Crown victory may seem unlikely, given the fact that it hasn't happened sine 1978—but it didn't seem very likely that a jockey making his first-ever Derby run would win, or that a horse starting from Gate 19 would win, or that a horse who set a Derby record in the first five splits would falter at the end.
This, it seems, is the year for breaking history and coming out of nowhere to win, which is exactly what I'll Have Another did, overcoming 15-1 odds.
Though the horse had long odds to overcome, coming into Saturday's race at 15-1 with an unknown jockey in Mario Gutierrez and a deep field of talent to contend with. But I'll Have Another's record entering the Derby speaks for itself: He entered the race on the heels of a win in the Santa Anita Derby—by a nose—and a win in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes.
Now 3-for-3 on the year, I'll Have Another officially put to rest the doubt that he couldn't succeed on a 1 1/4-mile track. His come-from-behind win proved that, regardless of distance, he's well-suited for getting perfect position at the end of the race and making a late run.
On a shorter, 1 3/16-mile race at the Preakness in two weeks, I'll Have Another will be just as much of a threat.
