Mayweather vs. Cotto: Much-Awaited Bout Will Fail to Live Up to Hype
As with any Floyd Mayweather fight, there's a great deal of hype around tonight's bout between "Money" and Miguel Cotto, but don't expect the fight to live up to what the brass of boxing tells you this fight will be.
Let's be honest, though, anything short of Mayweather versus Manny Pacquiao won't live up to the hype, and at least Cotto is a solid foe (who has the backing of Pacquiao tonight).
Three of SI.com's and two of ESPN.com's experts all have Mayweather keeping his undefeated streak alive tonight, but Cotto hasn't lost a fight in three years and only has two losses in his entire career.
So, at least some signs point to this fight not ending in an early knockout, like the fact that Cotto is four years younger than his high profile opponent. It should at least be a little more interesting than the Mayweather versus Shane Mosley match from a few years back.
Basically, Cotto will still be figuratively handing over his Light Middleweight belt tonight, he'll just be doing it after a light struggle the way an eight-year-old boy does when his dad tells him to put back the toy race car at the store.
This isn't the ramblings of a "Money" Mayweather fan by any means, I'm actually what some would call a "hater" of his, but he's favored in this fight for a reason. And anybody who decided to pick against the five-time world champion in the past has been proven wrong.
There is always the chance that this is the fight that we see Michigan's favorite boxer lose is first fight, but to me this is another night where Mayweather will dominate in a bout that was way over-hyped and still not the fight that boxing and its fans demand.
Mayweather can add another big payday and belt to his collection, while the rest of the sports world can continue to yawn over his victory over another guy not named Manny Pacquiao.
