Mayweather vs. Cotto Undercard: Last-Minute Odds and Predictions

Eric BallMay 4, 2012

While the Floyd Mayweather-Miguel Cotto fight is hogging all of the attention on Saturday night’s festivities, don’t forget about the other fights on the card.

All of them feature some serious intrigue and are certainly worth your attention.

Besides…if you’re going to shell out the $59.95 for the PPV, might as well watch the whole card right?

Here are last minute odds and predictions for all of the fights leading up to Money May and Cotto….with some predictions for the big fight as well.

Odds via oddsshark.com

Shane Mosley vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez -900

1 of 4

Age is the big story in this fight.

Mosley (46-7-1, 39 KOs) had just won the bronze medal at the Goodwill Games and was the lightweight amateur champion when Alvarez (39-0-1, 29 KOs) was born.

Wow.

Mosley is now 40 and Alvarez is 21 in one of the bigger age discrepancies in boxing history. Sometimes it’s as simple as that.

Mosley has had one good performance since 2008, a shocking upset over Antonio Margarito. He lost 23-of-24 rounds when facing Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather, as it seems his reflexes are simply not as great as they used to be.

While Alvarez certainly is beatable due to inexperience and sometimes questionable defense, it’s hard to see him losing to Mosley, who is a shell of his former self at this point in his career.

Prediction: Alvarez by decision

Jessie Vargas vs. Steve Forbes -3500

2 of 4

Forbes (35-10, 11 KO) is replacing the injured Alfonso Gomez, and is not the greatest understudy. You may know him as the guy who reached the finals of “The Contender” and was the tune-up for Oscar De La Hoya before another fight.

When that’s your biggest accomplishment, I don’t have a ton of faith in you.

Vargas (18-0, 9 KO) may not have as many fight’s to his name, but he’s aced every test to date and has much better foot work and defensive discipline than Forbes.

Prediction: Vargas KO in Round 6

Carlos Quintana vs. Deandre Latimore -130

3 of 4

Latimore (23-3, 17 KOs) and Quintana (28-3, 22 KO) have endured very similar careers. Both are respected in the sport, yet both have left something to be desired and have failed to live up to expectations.

Quintana enters as the boxer with more big-fight experience and the much more aggressive fighter. This is a rather one-sided fight that I envision getting rather ugly in a hurry. This is a great value pick.

Prediction: Quintana KO in Round 4

Miguel Cotto vs. Floyd Mayweather -800

4 of 4

The odds are a bit steep.

Money May (42-0, 26 KOs) is going to be the favorite in any fight as long as he keeps winning, but did look vulnerable at times against Victor Ortiz. I wonder what the outcome would have been if it wasn’t for the foolish head-butt and kiss on the cheek. Who knows how this fight would have ended.

Cotto (37-2, 30 KOs) is improving every fight as a defender, and is turning a weakness into a strength. If he is able to minimize the body blows and counters of Money May, there is certainly a chance Cotto walks away with the win.

While I think the punch accuracy and impeccable defense of Mayweather will ultimately keep his unblemished record intact, it’s going to be a lot closer than what oddsmakers are currently projecting.

Prediction: Mayweather by decision
