Floyd Mayweather: Ranking His Most Controversial Comments
Floyd Mayweather has excelled at two things in his adult life—boxing and causing controversy with his public statements.
The undefeated fighter has said it all. From racism to homophobia to plain ignorance, there is no stone left unturned by Mayweather's vitriolic rants over the years.
Before we go any further, I offer a warning: the quotes used in this article feature profane and hateful language.
If that offends you, stop here. If not, let's take a look at the six most awful things ever to come out of Pretty Boy Floyd's mouth, ranked in order according to shock value.
6. Mayweather Tweets About Jeremy Lin
1 of 6When Jeremy Lin took the sports world by storm earlier this year, everyone wanted to weigh in.
Most wanted to praise Lin's hard work and perseverance, but Floyd Mayweather took a much different angle on the point guard's meteoric rise.
He tweeted, "Jeremy Lin is a good player but all the hype is because he's Asian. Black players do what he does every night and don't get the same praise."
If he were any other athlete, Mayweather would have offered an apology and clarified his statement.
But Money Mayweather is one of a kind, and he stayed the course, again going to Twitter. He posted:
"Its OK for ESPN to give their opinion but I say something and everyone questions Floyd Mayweather. I'm speaking my mind on behalf of other NBA players. They are programmed to be politically correct and will be penalized if they speak up.
"
The boxer continued to dig himself deeper into a hole on this issue, and to this day he has refused to show any contrition.
Sadly, this is not even close to the most controversial thing Mayweather has said.
5. MMA Fighters Are Alcoholics
2 of 6Floyd Mayweather has never been shy about broadcasting opinions, especially on the subject of the MMA.
The boxer said in an interview:
"Mixed martial arts is for beer drinkers. Boxing is for everybody. You can't take my shoes off, take my shirt off and just throw me in a cage. You do that with animals. You can't do that with—you don't do that to humans.
"
As is the case with most of Mayweather's outlandish comments, he only made it worse with his explanation.
As he continued on the subject in the same he interview, he went on to claim that the UFC was created to give white people a chance to fight.
This was an ignorant comment, but he really only offended MMA fighters and fans. The higher spots on the list will be saved for remarks that offended a much wider group of people.
4. Larry Merchant Doesn't Know Boxing
3 of 6One of Floyd Mayweather's most controversial moments in the ring led to one of his most ridiculous comments ever.
After defeating Victor Ortiz in November 2011, boxing commentator Larry Merchant attempted to get Mayweather's side of the story, as the boxer won the bout on a punch that many saw as a cheap shot.
Merchant is a universally respected journalist who has been covering boxing for HBO for 34 years, but Mayweather had a different opinion of his interviewer.
In the post-fight he interview he told Merchant:
"You don't ever give me a fair shake, you know that. So I'm gonna go and let you talk to Victor Ortiz, alright. I'm through. Put somebody else up here to give me an interview. You never gave me a fair shake! HBO needs to fire you! You don't know s**t about boxing! You ain't s**t! You not s**t!
"
Merchant, as snappy as ever, replied, "I wish I was 50 years younger and I'd kick your ass."
Only Mayweather could coax that kind of response out of one of the classiest guys in the boxing media. This outburst was pretty despicable, but it's still a long way to the bottom from here.
3. Pacquiao to Become Mayweather's Personal Chef
4 of 6If any sports media outlet needs some fresh content, all it needs to do is put Floyd Mayweather in front of a webcam and let the magic happen.
In 2010 Mayweather recorded himself talking about rival Manny Pacquiao. After some unintelligible remarks about his own genitalia, he went on to say:
"Once I stomp the midget, I'm going to make that motherf***ker make me a sushi roll and cook me some rice... All that motherf***er is going to do is make me a sushi roll. He better make me a shrimp tempura cut roll... I'm gonna take that motherf***er to the teppenyaki room and chop his ass up with some rice.
"
Considering Pacquiao hails from the Phillipines, Mayweather would have been better off making a chicken adobo-related comment.
You were waiting for Pretty Boy Floyd to say something that offends a much wider audience. This rant likely doesn't sit well with most of the billions of people with East Asian heritage—so there it is.
A Few Choice Words for De La Hoya and Ortiz
5 of 6Let's keep the hate-train rolling, as Floyd Mayweather did not reserve insensitive comments for Asians, and had some not-so-nice things to say about Victor Ortiz's and Oscar De La Hoya's sexual orientation.
On HBO's 24/7, which profiled Mayweather and Ortiz leading up to their 2011 bout, Mayweather said this about his upcoming opponent:
"Motherf***er got a man rubbing on him. A man massaging him. He said he wants a strong black man massaging him. Gimme the strongest black man you got to massage me.
"
Once the topic of homosexuality was breached, Mayweather could not resist discussing his former opponent, Oscar De La Hoya. During the same episode, he said:
"De La Hoya a hoe flat up he gay and he a hoe, Victor Ortiz a hoe too, he let a man massage him and the other one wearing fish nets. And then he gonna talk about he look at him like a god, are you f***ing serious.
"
Mayweather once again proved that no one is safe from his insensitive and hateful comments.
No One's Safe, Not Even Pops
6 of 6Of all the terrible things Floyd Mayweather has said, nothing was worse than his soul-piercing rant against his own father.
Again on HBO's 24/7, Mayweather allowed his emotions to get the best of him and said this to Floyd Mayweather Sr. while the cameras were rolling:
"You couldn't fight worth s**t. You weren't never nothing but a motherf***ing cab driver... You weren't s**t as a fighter, so how you going to be something a trainer? You wasn't s**t as a motherf***ing fighter. Get the f**k out of my gym. F***ot.
"
While Mayweather Jr. has had a strained relationship with his father for years, this incident does not sit well with many fathers and sons.
Sure, nobody's perfect, and Mayweather's dad does not even come close. But the hateful attack on his father's career and legacy not only shows a lack of respect, but a complete absence of decency.
Even with all the outlandish comments Mayweather has made over the year, nothing tops this one.
