Mayweather vs. Cotto Odds: Predictions for Saturday Night's Main Event Fight
Fight day has finally arrived for Floyd Mayweather and Miguel Cotto. Mayweather enters the fight with an undefeated record (42-0) and the oddsmakers are showing him a lot of respect, making him a sizable favorite over Cotto.
Let's take a look at some picks for the fight and make predictions on how they will turn out. There has been plenty of hype leading up to the bout, so it should be interesting. All lines are courtesy of Bovada.lv.
Over 11.5 Rounds (-200)
Mayweather has only scored two knockouts in his last seven fights dating back to 2006. He's become a lot more comfortable playing a defensive style in recent years, which has allowed him to dominate a fight without having to go for a knockout.
On the flip side, Cotto has knocked out three straight opponents, which would seem to make this a risky pick. But when you consider the foes he was beating in those matches aren't anywhere near the level of Mayweather, the pick looks a lot better.
I expect Cotto to use a lot of energy early attempting to get the upper hand, which will ultimately cause him to wear down. That's when Mayweather will pounce.
Mayweather By Decision (-150)
This pick is similar to the last prop, but it provides better value for those who feel strongly that Mayweather will pick up the victory. He hasn't really been challenged in awhile and it's hard to see Cotto bucking that trend.
After negotiations with Manny Pacquiao broke down, Mayweather decided to take on Cotto instead. While it was a safe selection, it also puts a lot of pressure on "Money" to make sure he doesn't slip up, giving the "Pac-Man" camp more excuses.
Mayweather knows he has all the tools to beat Cotto if they go the distance, so I don't expect him to take any unnecessary chances. He'll take control in the middle rounds and cruise to victory.
Mayweather Straight Victory (-700)
The safest pick on the board. Even though the return on investment will be low because of the line, it also doesn't carry as much risk as the other options. It's hard imagine Cotto walking out of MGM Grand Garden Arena with the belt.
Mayweather holds an advantage in just about every key area and even Cotto's strengths, such as power, are close. So it would take a perfect fight from Cotto to win and the chances of that happening are low due to the favorite's defensive skills.
It might be a closer fight than most people are expecting, but when it's all said and done, Mayweather will walk away with his 43rd consecutive win.
