Kentucky Derby Odds: Betting Lines You Must Cash in on

Ben ChodosJun 7, 2018

Time is running out to place bets on the 2012 Kentucky Derby, and there a few horses with very favorable odds.

The race is set to start on May 5 at 6:24 P.M. ET, and Bodemeister is the early favorite at 4-1.

Bob Baffert's colt is a fantastic horse, but history warns against betting on the favorite.

The thoroughbred with the best odds has won at Churchill Downs just four times in the last 32 years.

Last year's winner, Animal Kingdom, faced 20.9-1 odds going into the race. Twice in the last seven years, a horse with 50-1 odds or worse took first (Mine That Bird, 2009 and Giacomo, 2005).

This year, there are three horses that stand out as good candidates to bring a big payday to some lucky betters.

Daddy Nose Best, 15-1

Late-breaking horses will have a big advantage in this year's race.

In a very competitive field with a few strong starters, front-runners will have to maintain an impossible pace in order to lead the whole way. The colts with a knack for making late charges will be able to take advantage of this.

Steven Asmussen's, Daddy Nose Best will be jockeyed by Garret Gomez, and this thoroughbred is in great hands.

"

There’s only one horse who has won two races at a mile and an eighth, and he finished them going stronger than he started them. I’m not knocking any other horses. But that tells me he should be competitive with these others.

"

Daddy Nose Best has the necessary talent and experience to take first at Churchill Downs.

El Padrino, 20-1

Todd Pletcher's other horse, Gemologist has attracted a lot of attention, but any of this master trainer's colts has a shot to win the Derby.

Pletcher has won five Eclipse awards in the last eight years, and El Padrino is another late-charger who could blow by the competition in the final stretch.

Pletcher will be looking for his second winner in three years, as Super Saver took the title at Churchill Downs in 2010.

With the right running style and an All-Star team to handle him, El Padrino gives great value at his current odds.

Creative Cause, 12-1

California-based horses have done well for iconic trainers Bob Baffert and Todd Pletcher, but 71-year-old Mike Harrington has never gotten a colt to the Kentucky Derby, until now.

The California trainer put the importance of this race in perspective and said, "This is probably two derbies for me. It’s my first and my last.”

Creative Cause has been extremely impressive in races leading up to the Derby. He lost the Santa Anita Derby by a nose and beat Bodemeister in the San Felipe Stakes.

This horse does not have the big names surrounding him, but Creative Cause has big-time speed and poses a serious threat to finish first on May 5.
