Mayweather vs. Cotto Weigh-In: Everything You Need to Know About Media Event
Floyd Mayweather and Miguel Cotto will take another step toward their Saturday night showdown with the official weigh-in on Friday afternoon.
Mayweather is a heavy favorite, but Cotto has carried himself with a lot of confidence during the buildup.
The underdog will be defending his WBA (super) light middleweight title, so the fight will be a whole lot more than simply collecting a paycheck for Cotto. Not to mention, an upset victory would provide a gigantic boost to his career.
Here's a look at everything fans need to know about Friday's weigh-in, followed by a couple of things to watch as the boxers meet one last time before the big day.
Where: MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev.
When: Friday, May 4 at 5:45 p.m. ET
Watch: HBO and HBO.com
Storylines to Watch
Mayweather's Weight
Cotto agreed to fight Mayweather because the five-division champion was willing to move up to 154 pounds to make the bout happen.
That's an increase of seven pounds, but “Money” isn't a stranger to that type of change.
There isn't a catchweight involved like so many other fights in recent years, so it was up to Mayweather to come into Cotto's comfort zone. It will be interesting to see if he comes in right at the number or a little bit short like he did against Oscar De La Hoya.
No matter what the scale says, Mayweather will remain a big favorite heading into Saturday night, but these intense training regimens have to start catching up with him as he gets older.
Any Fireworks?
Just like NASCAR fans enjoy the occasional wreck during a race, boxing fans look forward to brawls during a weigh-in.
Even though there haven't been many to speak of lately, the hype surrounding Mayweather and Cotto at least adds some suspense to the mix.
Both guys have a sense of swagger about them, and personalities like that usually don't go together well. You never know what might happen if Mayweather starts running his mouth as he's been known to do. The only thing that moves faster than his lips are his fists.
Even though the weigh-in will likely come and go without any notable developments, the outside chance that something might happen makes it intriguing.
Atmosphere
The weigh-in will be open to the public in Las Vegas, so that should make the event more fun than simply having the fighters and the media in attendance.
Since it's so close to the fight, fans of both boxers are probably already in town. It would be terrific if there were some dueling chants, adding a sense of rivalry to the atmosphere.
The fight itself might not live up to expectations if Mayweather fights up to his capabilities, but the buildup has been strong.
All told, it should be an entertaining event that should add even more drama with just over 24 hours before Mayweather and Cotto go to battle.
