Kentucky Derby Odds: 5 Post Positions Worth Betting on

Chris StephensJun 7, 2018

The Kentucky Derby post positions are out and there are definitely some horses that are looking good.

However, there are some favorites who aren't exactly in the best position possible.

Still, others are in prime position to take the first leg of the Triple Crown.

Here's a look at five posts positions, and horses in them, which are worth betting on for Saturday.

A Little History

1 of 6

Never in the history of the Kentucky Derby has a horse won from post positions 17 and 19.

So history is definitely not on the side of Done Talking (50-1) and I'll Have Another (12-1), making it tough for one of the Derby favorites.

Not to mention that post positions 14 (two wins), 18 (one win) and 20 (two wins) also haven't had much success, although Big Brown did win it from the 20th position in 2008.

This year, Hansen (10-1) occupies 14, while Sabercat (30-1) is slotted in 18 and Liaison (50-1) is in 20.

Right away, there are two favorites who are not in great positions, considering the history.

But this field is strong, and anything can happen.

Union Rags: Post Position 4

2 of 6

Union Rags is one of the favorites heading into the Derby, with 9-2 odds.

Union Rags starts from post position four, which has won 10 times, most recently in 2010 with Super Saver.

The good thing about this post position is that it's not too close to the rail to get blocked in, and not too far out where extra distance has to be run.

With this position, Union Rags might see his odds drop prior to the gates opening Saturday.

Dullahan: Post Position 5

3 of 6

Dullahan is currently sitting at 8-1 odds and is coming from a post position that is tied for the most wins in Kentucky Derby history.

The last time a horse won from the fifth position was Funny Cide in 2003.

Dullahan is in the same boat as Union Rags. With a great starting position, if this horse can get out fast, then it could be his race to lose.

Bodemeister: Post Position 6

4 of 6

Bodemeister currently sits at 4-1 odds for Saturday's race.

However, compared to other post positions, the sixth position hasn't won that many Derbys.

The sixth position has only won six races in history, the second lowest total between the first 10 posts.

The last horse to win from the sixth position was Sea Hero in 1993.

Creative Cause: Post Position 8

5 of 6

Creative Cause comes into the Kentucky Derby with 12-1 odds.

The eighth position has won 10 times in the Derby's history, with the last instance coming in 2009 with Mine That Bird.

Barbaro also won from that position in 2006.

Although one would think that the eighth position would be tougher coming from near the middle, history has shown that not to be the case.

Alpha: Post Position 11

6 of 6

This could be considered a stretch since Alpha is coming from the 11th position, which has won only three times.

The last time the 11th position won was in 1933 when Broker's Tip won, so history is definitely not on Alpha's side.

If any horse can go against history from this position, it's Alpha.

Currently, he sits at 5-1 odds, which is No. 3 out of all of the horses.
