Projecting the Buffalo Bills' Top Training Camp Battles

Erik FrenzMay 3, 2012

When the Buffalo Bills added two cornerbacks, two linebackers and two offensive tackles in the 2012 NFL draft, they created a training camp position battle at each of those positions.

It's a good thing, too, especially since they lacked depth at each position down the stretch when the wheels fell off their wagons as they circled the 2011 season.

That should give the Bills a chance to trim some fat in training camp, so let's take a look at all of the positions where roster spots will be the most heavily contested.

Cornerback

On the roster: Aaron Williams, Leodis McKelvin, Justin Rogers, Terrence McGee, Drayton Florence, Stephon Gilmore, Ron Brooks, Prince Miller

When Bills GM Buddy Nix selected two cornerbacks in the draft, the cornerbacks already on the roster were put on notice to step up or step off the field. Let's face it: He didn't draft Stephon Gilmore to be the second coming of Leodis McKelvin.

The Bills got better in the secondary with those two picks and already added Aaron Williams last year.

McKelvin, Terrence McGee and Drayton Florence had bullseyes on their backs last season, and each gave up a passer rating of over 100, according to Pro Football Focus. While the improved pass-rush should help, the Bills will be looking for the best ballhawks of the group to feed off rushed and tipped passes.

By adding more talent at cornerback in the draft, the Bills increased the competition at the position, and that should have everyone working their tails off at training camp.

The only locks to make the roster are Gilmore, Brooks and Williams. It would cost a bit to cut Florence or McGee since they both have two years left on their deals, but McKelvin has just one year left on his rookie contract.

Wide Receiver

On the roster: Stevie Johnson, Ruvell Martin, Donald Jones, David Nelson, Brad Smith, Naaman Roosevelt, T.J. Graham, Derek Hagan, Marcus Easley, Kamar Aiken

The Bills severely lacked a big play threat in the passing game to take the pressure off of Stevie Johnson down the stretch in 2011, and unless they have the second coming of Mike Wallace, third-round pick T.J. Graham probably won't be that, either.

As of now, the Bills have a deep core of receivers that had a hard time providing an explosive threat in the passing game, all competing to see who can be the most explosive threat in the passing game. Interesting.

The locks in the group would be Stevie Johnson, David Nelson, Brad Smith and T.J. Graham. That leaves Ruvell Martin, Donald Jones, Naaman Roosevelt, Derek Hagan, Marcus Easley and Kamar Aiken to fight over one or two more roster spots.
