2012 NBA Mock Draft: Updated 1st Round Featuring Ideal Fits for Every Team

Tim DanielsMay 3, 2012

While there are still plenty of fans rooting for their favorite team in the NBA playoffs, nearly half the league has already turned its attention to the draft. It's a chance for playoff hopeful teams to find the final piece of the puzzle or rebuilding franchises to select a building block.

Here's a complete mock draft of the opening round featuring three players that are perfect picks for their projected teams. Even though the class lacks star power, there's plenty of depth available, so teams drafting late in the round should still get good value.

1. Charlotte Bobcats: Anthony Davis, PF, Kentucky

Seven wins. That's almost unfathomable. The Bobcats need to start building from the ground up and the best way to do that is with a dominant big man. Davis powered Kentucky to a national championship with his play on both ends of the floor.

He will immediately become the team's most talented player, and it's only a matter of time before he establishes himself as one of the league's best forwards. There simply aren't many flaws in his game to speak of.

Some years there can be a legitimate debate about who the top pick should be, but not this time around. Davis will be the selection.

2. Washington Wizards: Thomas Robinson, PF, Kansas

Outside of former top overall pick John Wall, the Wizards lack talent in basically every area. Robinson would give them an inside presence.

3. Cleveland Cavaliers: Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, SF, Kentucky

It's taking a while, but the Cavaliers are putting together a solid group of young players. Kidd-Gilchrist will develop into a terrific swingman.

4. New Orleans Hornets: Andre Drummond, C, Connecticut

Chris Kaman is a free agent at season's end, which will leave New Orleans weak in the middle. Drummond has a ton of upside.

5. Sacramento Kings: Harrison Barnes, SF, North Carolina

While Barnes didn't show as much improvement as he probably hoped after returning to North Carolina, he's still worthy of a top-five pick.

6. Portland Trail Blazers (via Brooklyn Nets): Bradley Beal, SG, Florida

The Trail Blazers have a budding star in Nicolas Batum, but could use another outside threat like Beal to take some pressure off him.

7. Golden State Warriors: Jared Sullinger, PF, Ohio State

After an impressive career at Ohio State, Sullinger would provide the Warriors another reliable big man to go with the team's guard depth.

8. Toronto Raptors: Perry Jones III, F, Baylor

Jones will fall into the “tweener” category until he adds some strength. The Raptors have plenty of holes to fill, however, so that shouldn't worry them.

9. Detroit Pistons: Arnett Moultrie, PF, Mississippi State

Even though Moultrie didn't garner a lot of attention during his time at Mississippi State, he has good size and should translate well to the next level.

10. New Orleans Hornets (via Minnesota Timberwolves): Kendall Marshall, PG, North Carolina

Jarrett Jack actually exceeded expectations as the Hornets point guard this season, but he shouldn't be considered a long-term option. If Marshall is still on the board, New Orleans would be crazy to pass on the North Carolina product.

He has great size for the position and should have no trouble running an NBA offense. He's the best distributor in the class and is underrated on the defensive end. Once he further develops his shot, he'll become a complete player.

The Hornets have a couple nice pieces, but this draft should go a long way in giving them the depth they need to compete with two early picks.

11. Portland Trail Blazers: Tyler Zeller, PF, North Carolina

J.J. Hickson showed flashes, but it's no guarantee he'll ever reach his potential. Zeller is prepared to make an immediate impact.

12. Milwaukee Bucks: Meyers Leonard, C, Illinois

The combination of Brandon Jennings and Monta Ellis should provide a ton of points, so the Bucks need to focus on the interior.

13. Phoenix Suns: Damian Lillard, PG, Weber State

Since Steve Nash's future remains up in the air with free agency looming, the Suns have to protect themselves by taking Lillard.

14. Houston Rockets: Jeremy Lamb, SG, Connecticut

Lamb has terrific athleticism that might allow him to move up the board during the draft process, but for now he makes sense for the Rockets.

15. Philadelphia 76ers: Austin Rivers, SG, Duke

In reality, Rivers could have used another season at Duke to hone his skills, especially on defense, but he's too talented to slide for long.

16. Houston Rockets (via New York Knicks): Terrence Jones, SF, Kentucky

Another player with great size and athleticism that would help the Rockets keep pace in a tough division. Jones was an unsung hero at Kentucky.

17. Dallas Mavericks: Terrence Ross, SG, Washington

The Mavericks have an aging roster in desperate need of a youth infusion, so they should just take the best player available.

18. Minnesota Timberwolves (via Utah Jazz): Dion Waiters, G, Syracuse

Kevin Love has established himself as one of the league's premier post players, but he needs more help from his guards.

19. Orlando Magic: Andrew Nicholson, PF, St. Bonaventure

Even though Nicholson will need some transition time after playing against lower-level college competition, he fits the new PF mold.

20. Denver Nuggets: John Henson, PF, North Carolina

The Nuggets could go any number of directions with this pick since they will be searching for depth. Henson would be a nice rotation piece.

21. Boston Celtics: Doron Lamb, SG, Kentucky

Yet another player from Kentucky's title team. The Celtics know Ray Allen won't be able to play forever, so taking a replacement now would be wise.

22. Boston Celtics (via Los Angeles Clippers): Royce White, SF, Iowa State

The same can be said for Paul Pierce, who has logged a lot of miles for a 34 year old. White has a lot of sleeper potential.

23. Atlanta Hawks: Tony Wroten, G, Washington

Wroten would provide the Hawks with versatility, and he fits the team's system well. He would make for a nice duo with Jeff Teague.

24. Cleveland Cavaliers (via Los Angeles Lakers): Draymond Green, PF, Michigan State

The Cavaliers need a post player like Green, who has a high motor and is more than willing to do the dirty work in the paint.

25. Memphis Grizzlies: Marquis Teague, PG, Kentucky

Mike Conley never developed into the superstar people expected, but he'd still have some value on the trade market if the Grizzlies drafted Teague.

26. Indiana Pacers: Moe Harkless, SF, St. John's

Indiana actually has one of the most well-rounded rosters in the entire league. Harkless would give the Pacers even more depth.

27. Miami Heat: Fab Melo, C, Syracuse

Melo would be a perfect fit for the Heat. A reliable defensive center has been the only thing missing from the roster since the big three came together last offseason. Melo would finally fill that void, making Miami even more dangerous.

The Syracuse star wasn't able to play in the NCAA Tournament, but he showed enough during the regular season to earn a first-round grade. While his offensive game needs work, the Heat don't need him to contribute much on that end.

As long as he plays solid defense, Melo will provide a ton of value to the Heat. It's a great example of the rich getting richer.

28. Oklahoma City Thunder: John Jenkins, SG, Vanderbilt

The Thunder like bringing James Harden off the bench to provide a spark. Jenkins would provide them with somebody to start at SG.

29. Chicago Bulls: William Buford, SG, Ohio State

Richard Hamilton was a nice addition by the Bulls, but his age has clearly starting catching up with him. Buford gives them a younger option.

30. Golden State Warriors (via San Antonio Spurs): Jeffery Taylor, SF, Vanderbilt

After adding a big man earlier in the round, Golden State's second pick should just be the top player left on the board, which would be Taylor.
