Mayweather vs. Cotto Predictions: Money Will End Fight with an Early Knockout

Tim KeeneyMay 3, 2012

If you're not a fan of action in a boxing match, you probably shouldn't watch Floyd Mayweather take on Miguel Cotto on May 5.

Because there's going to be a lot of it.

And then some more.

Mayweather's all-world defensive skills generally point towards a bout that won't include many connections. In fact, Money has only secured two knockouts in his last seven fights.

But his defense, which Cotto is well aware of, is precisely the reason things will open up. ESPN's Dan Rafael further breaks this down below.

As long as Junito wants to win—I'm sure he would prefer to do the knocking rather than get knocked—he's going to have to attack Mayweather. He's bigger and arguably more powerful, but he doesn't have the reach or speed necessary to pick Money apart.

If he tries to jab and stab at Money then Mayweather is going to absolutely dominate Cotto. He's too quick and his defense is much too good.

Cotto needs a knockout.

Period.

So, while Junito is busy pressing the issue, throwing as many inside punches as possible and going for the knockout, he's going to leave himself susceptible.

That's where Mayweather will strike. He's incredibly impressive at simply taking what he's given, but in this instance, Cotto will give the opportunity for a knockout.

Remember that six of Cotto's last seven fights have ended in a TKO, and that includes the only two losses of his career.

When he loses, he loses in style.

Furthermore, don't be surprised if Mayweather comes with the intention to put on a show. Not many people—especially those who want Mayweather-Pacquiao—are overly excited for this fight like they should be, and the pressure could be on Money's camp to excite the fans.

It's certainly not a necessity for them to intentionally inject excitement into this fight, but it still wouldn't be surprising to see Mayweather, who is on his way to jail after this fight, come out a little quicker than normal.

No matter what happens, though, get ready to see a knockout on Saturday.
