Kentucky Derby Odds: Locks That Will Make You Money on Saturday
Wednesday's drawing finally determined pole positions and odds for the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby, putting to rest weeks of speculation.
As expected, two of the early favorites earned the greatest odds and positions in the top 10—though Gemologist, picked by some as a potential winner, drew post 15 yet still has decent odds at 6-1.
Here are some of the horses that will be your best bets when you're putting down your money prior to Saturday's race.
Bodemeister
Position: 6
Odds: 4-1
Bodemeister, trained by three-time Derby winner Bob Baffert, has long been the favorite before it was made official on Wednesday, when he drew position No. 6 and 4-1 odds.
It won't be easy for the colt, who will be fighting long odds that have nothing to do with the ones set by Mike Battaglia. If he wins, he'll become the first horse since 1882 to win the Kentucky Derby after going unraced as a two-year-old.
But there couldn't be a better trainer for him than Baffert, who's emerged victorious from Churchill Downs in 1997, 1998 and 2002 and is gunning for another win that will put him in second place on the all-time list. Baffert recently suffered a heart attack in Dubai but is feeling strong as the Derby approaches.
Bodemeister debuted on January 16 and has two wins and two second-place finishes since. According to the Associated Press (via SI.com), six horses have won from the No. 6 post.
Union Rags
Position: 4
Odds: 9-2
Prior to his third-place finish in the Florida Derby, Union Rags was heralded as the runaway favorite. Since, his odds have decreased and were set at 9-2 after he drew the fourth position.
Still, he's won four of six career starts and has netted $1,198,000. His trainer, Michael Matz, won the Kentucky Derby in 2006 with Barbaro.
A couple of weeks ago, Union Rags ran four furlongs in 47.40 seconds, and while it's obvious that he has the ability to win in him—he did it at the Fountain of Youth—there are questions about whether he's good enough to take on the field at Churchill Downs.
Gemologist
Position: 15
Odds: 6-1
Though he's unbeaten in five starts and recently won in the Wood Memorial, his odds are set at 6-1, and he drew the No. 15 position.
Despite the fact that Bodemeister's odds are higher, Gemologist is one of the safer picks, and his trainer, Todd Pletcher, won his first Derby in 2010, racing Super Saver.
Is Gemologist good enough to be Pletcher's second winner in three years? Possibly—he's certainly been the most consistent horse in a field full of could-bes.
Gemologist is the only undefeated colt, but some say he's been untested in his wins. Regardless, he's won twice before at Churchill Downs, and he definitely looks the best on paper.
