Mayweather vs Cotto: Why Superfight Will Go the Distance
Floyd Mayweather and Miguel Cotto will square off this weekend, and in the minds of many, it is going to be an instant classic. Both men are skilled, top boxers with as much ability as anybody else.
Both men are extremely difficult to finish, leading to the conclusion that this fight will go the distance. Neither fighter is going to finish each other, leading to the speculation that we will have a decision come Saturday night.
Floyd Mayweather has never lost. It's as simple as that. Even more than that, I don't even think I have ever seen the man hurt unless he has gotten tired in a fight.
A boxer as good as Mayweather is will use superior footwork and great striking defense to ensure that Cotto does not knock his head off. Cotto has great power, but Mayweather has speed and technique to counter.
Cotto is a tough customer himself, despite losing by knockout in both of his career losses. He has only lost to Antonio Margarito, which he avenged with his own knockout of the Mexican star, and Manny Pacquiao. Other than these two knockout losses, the Puerto Rican star has been golden.
Cotto is going to try and employ brawl-like tactics, which will keep Mayweather at bay and force him to pick his spots. He will use superior footwork and technique to stay out of range of Cotto's home run shots that will aim to send Mayweather into another dimension.
On the other hand, Cotto is a tough customer who can take a great deal of punishment. In his two knockout losses, he took an inhuman amount of punishment en route to late knockout losses. Any normal man would have crumbled under the punishment he received, but he stood there and took 11th- and 12th-round knockouts, when he could have thrown in the towel earlier.
It is almost like the unstoppable force meet the immovable object. They are going to make noise and create friction, but in the end, they will both be standing there. Yes, they will be bloodied and battered, but their pride will fly high and neither man will taste a knockout.
Mayweather is undefeated for a reason. He is hard to hit and hard to get a good shot in on. Cotto has a helluva chin and great brawling tactics that allow him to be a menace to any boxer he steps in the ring with.
This leads me to believe that this fight will not end by either mans punch. In fact, I almost guarantee this fight will go to a decision, albeit a pretty one-sided decision in favor of Floyd "Money" Mayweather.
