Florida State Recruiting: Checking in on the 'Noles 2013 Class

Sanjay KirpalaniMay 1, 2012

Ever since Jimbo Fisher officially took over for Bobby Bowden, the Florida State program has undergone a significant facelift—but the one thing that has not changed is the Seminoles’ ability to reel in top flight recruiting classes.

Fisher brought in a top 10 class in 2010—less than a month after the announcement that he was taking the reins was made, and then followed it up with consecutive classes ranked second in the country by 247 Sports.

The 2013 class—presently ranked 11th in the country by 247 Sports—has gotten off to a slower start than the previous two cycles.

Several factors are to blame for the Seminoles' current position on the recruiting trail.

In a state that is constantly a recruiting hotbed, the rival Florida Gators have gotten the better of the ‘Noles for the battle of the Sunshine State thus far.

Florida has 12 commitments from in-state products, which has helped the Gators to get off to a fast start on their way to a class that is currently rated as the nation’s second best by 247 Sports.

A major dynamic for FSU that helped the 'Noles reel in top classes the last two years were commitments from national prospects who then helped recruit a bevy of talented players to come join them.

Two years ago, it was safety Karlos Williams committing and becoming the bell cow recruit—then Mario Edwards, Jr. followed in 2012.

This year, there is not a player on FSU’s commitment list that is a household name nationally who is capable of filling that role.

However, things could be on the verge of picking up for the Seminoles heading into the spring evaluation period with their coaching staff pounding the pavement visiting top targets across the country.

Virginia 4-star linebacker E.J. Levenberry became FSU’s ninth commitment last week, which is a major coup considering he’s the third linebacker to pledge to the Seminoles and helps shore up one of the biggest needs for FSU in this cycle.

With offensive line (one player committed), running back (no commits) and cornerback (one commit) being the other positions Fisher and his staff need to load up on this cycle, there is still plenty of time for the Seminoles to make a run towards the top five.

Considering how FSU has finished the last few years, there is no reason to panic at this stage.

However, momentum in recruiting is a pivotal part of piecing together a top-rated class—and FSU’s 2013 class could use a jolt before the season begins.
