Michigan Football: Josh Furman Reinstatement Is Huge for Wolverines

Mike MoraitisMay 1, 2012

After being acquitted of misdemeanor charges, the Michigan Wolverines have decided to reinstate Josh Furman, and he will rejoin his team who is in need of his presence on the field.

Nobody was happier than head coach Brady Hoke, who announced Furman's reinstatement and acceptance back onto the team. Furman will be an important part of Michigan's defense which ranked sixth in the nation last season.

As a potential star on the Wolverines defense, Furman's talent on the field will greatly benefit his team, and Michigan has the chance to be even better than they were last season en route to a possible national championship.

Here's why Furman is so vital to the Wolverines' success both now, and in the future.

Secondary Help

As a former running back, Furman has great speed on the field, and that makes him ideal to cover a ton of ground on a football field.

As a safety, Furman can protect the Wolverines' deep and protect them for any big plays down field. Also, Furman has the ability to play lockdown defense on the opposing team's top receiver when called to do so.

That type of help defensively can ground any team's passing attack and turn them into a one-dimensional offense.

Versatility

As I mentioned before, Furman used to be a running back in his younger days. But Furman is no stranger to the defensive side having played some time at linebacker as well.

Not only can he cover the field deep, but Furman can also be invaluable when the Wolverines are looking to blitz the quarterback. He is big and strong enough, as well as experienced enough, to pack the line and put pressure on the offense.

College football is all about being able to play all-around roles on the defense, specifically defense. Furman fits that build.

No Further Negative Press

Furman is expected to be a top player in the future for Michigan, and with that type of attention comes a great responsibility.

I won't even begin to speculate what happened between Furman and his ex-girlfriend, but the Wolverines can ill-afford to have one of their best up-and-coming players getting themselves into a potentially ugly situation such as the one that might've almost occurred.

No school wants negative attention like that, and especially with the way news works in this day and age, you'd be hard-pressed to avoid a media frenzy.
