Kentucky Derby 2012: Elite Horses That Will Shine in Year's Biggest Race

Tim DanielsJun 7, 2018

There isn't another horse race on the calendar quite like the Kentucky Derby. The most talented three-year-old horses converge in Kentucky to highlight a day of pageantry and partying that captivates the entire sports world.

With that in mind, here's a look at three horses that should be in the mix as the field turns for home at Churchill Downs. There hasn't been a triple crown winner since 1978. If that streak is going to end, it will likely be one of these stars that makes it happen.

Bodemeister

Bodemeister made his presence felt with an impressive victory in the Arkansas Derby. Trained by one of horse racing's biggest names in Bob Baffert, you know Bodemeister will be well prepared when the gates open on Saturday.

Jockey Mike Smith rode Giacomo to victory in the derby back in 2005 and has no shortage of marquee wins under his belt. It takes patience in order to survive the mile-and-a-quarter race, and Smith should provide Bodemeister with it.

There have been some concerns raised about Bodemeister's lack of race experience heading into the crowded field, but the colt has more than enough talent to make up for it.

Gemologist

Any questions about Gemologist's staying power were answered by a key win in the Wood Memorial last month. It's one of the most important derby tune-up races, and Gemologist was able to outlast fellow contender Alpha.

His 5-0 career record will make him a popular pick on derby day, but like all contenders, a lot will be decided by post position. He hasn't faced enough large fields to overcome a bad draw, so luck has a major influence on his chances.

All told, he has the speed necessary to hang near the top for the entire trip. Even though the level of competition wasn't the highest in his first few starts, Gemologist can't be ignored.

Union Rags

A disappointing trip in the Florida Derby that resulted in a third-place finish has dampened some of the excitement surrounding Union Rags. That said, he won four of his previous five starts and is still one of the most talented horses in the field.

Michael Matz, who trained Barbaro to the Kentucky Derby winner's circle six years ago, has put Union Rags in prime position to claim this year's Run for the Roses. Having not raced since late March, the gifted horse should be well rested for the run.

It will be interesting to see how the betting public reacts after his post position is drawn. But as long as he's not stuck on the rail early, Union Rags should be a threat to win the derby.
