2012 Olympics: Countries with the Best Chance to Claim Gold in Men's Basketball

Tim DanielsJun 7, 2018

There are now less than three months until the summer Olympics begin in London. One of the most hyped events will be men's basketball, as the star-studded American squad looks for its second consecutive gold medal after a dominating performance in Beijing.

Let's take a look at what it will take for the United States to win again, as well as a couple of the teams that will attempt to shock the world by pulling off the upset.

1. United States

The Red, White and Blue will once again field the tournament's most talent roster. Led by LeBron James and Kobe Bryant, the Americans shouldn't have any trouble lighting up the scoreboard and figure to utilize an up-tempo style.

If other countries are looking for hope, look no further than a couple of injuries the team has already suffered. Derrick Rose and Dwight Howard both suffered injuries at the end of this grueling, condensed season, which clearly has taken its toll on NBA players.

That said, the amount of depth available for the United States makes it the favorite. It's going to take an extraordinary effort in order to beat the U.S., especially in the knockout round when they have built up some chemistry.

2. Spain

Spain put up a strong fight in the championship game four years ago, and once again looks like the biggest threat to the Americans. La Roja have a solid mix of NBA stars and international players. They claimed gold back in 2006.

The Gasol brothers give them an interior presence that other teams won't be able to match, and they have great depth down low in Serge Ibaka. The key to winning will be getting enough points from the team's perimeter scorers, most notably Juan Carlos Navarro.

They won't be able to keep up with the Americans in a run-and-gun game, so Spain will have to slow down the pace and execute in the half court. That would keep the game close and give La Roja a chance late.

3. France

If you're looking for a potential sleeper, look no further than France.

San Antonio Spurs teammates Tony Parker and Boris Diaw will be joined by future star Nicolas Batum and defensive stalwart Joakim Noah to give France plenty of star power.

The French also have players like Mickael Gelabale and Nando de Colo with plenty of experience at the international level. There isn't a lot of depth available, however, so France will be relying on good health to make a deep run.

A lot will come down to Parker.

If he plays like he did for the Spurs this season, when he was basically unstoppable at times driving to the basket, France will be a tough out. If he's worn down from a playoff run, the team's chances drop significantly.
