Kentucky Derby Field 2012: Best Horses No One Is Talking About

Ian HanfordMay 1, 2012

The 138th Kentucky Derby will commence this weekend. The race's favorites have been announced, but these are not the horses everyone should be paying attention too.

Bodemeister, Union Rags, Gemologist, Dullahan and Creative Cause are all common expert picks to win the Run of the Roses.

These are all admirable choices, but a few other horses deserve some pre-race chatter as well.

Favorites will receive the hype, but these horses are forces to be reckoned with.

Done Talking

1 of 5

Done Talking is a distance runner with an impressive pedigree. He will surprise people with a solid running in the 138th Kentucky Derby.

Done Talking's last race was a victory. He won the Grade III Illinois Derby at Hawthorne.

His sire, Broken Vow, had big victories in the Ben Ali Stakes. However, Broken Vow's sire is where things get interesting.

Broken Vow's sire was Unbridled. Unbridled won the 1990 Kentucky Derby, Florida Derby and Breeders' Cup Classic. He is sired by former English Triple Crown winner Nijinsky II.

Done Talking's decorated family tree and experience in distance running will pay dividends in this year's Kentucky Derby.

He is not listed as a favorite, but he could shock people when the it is time to race.

El Padrino

2 of 5

El Padrino's jockey, Rafael Bejarano, was Bodemeister's regular jockey before Mike Smith took the reins. Now, the successful jockey will look to grab first place for El Padrino in the 138th Kentucky Derby.

El Padrino finished fourth in the Grade I Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park and first in the Risen Star race at the Fair Grounds earlier this year.

He has experience running one-plus mile races and should be in contention all the way until the end.

His trainer, Todd Pletcher, trained 2010 Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver.

El Padrino's pedigree can be traced through 1997 Blue Grass Stakes champion Pulpit, former Horse of the Year A.P. Indy and Seattle Slew before that. He also has family ties to Secretariat.

Family bloodlines and recent success should tell everyone to watch for Rafael Bejarano and El Padrino on race day.

I'll Have Another

3 of 5

I'll Have Another has the speed and stamina to contend in this year's Run for the Roses.

I'll Have Another is coming off two first-place finishes this year. He finished first in the Grade I Santa Anita Derby at Santa Anita Park and in the Robert B. Lewis at Santa Anita Park. Both were one-plus mile races.

His sire, Flower Alley, was an accomplished racer. He won the Jim Dandy and Travers, and finished second in the 2005 Arkansas Derby. He also finished ninth in the Kentucky Derby that same year.

I'll Have Another has experience running longer races and has had success. His lineage is encouraging and he will be a horse to watch this weekend.

Went the Day Well

4 of 5

Went The Day Well has the trainer, jockey and pedigree to win the Kentucky Derby.

In his only race this year, Went The Day Well won the Vinery Racing Spiral at Turfway Park.

Went The Day Well's trainer is H. Graham Motion. Motion saddled the winner of last year's Kentucky Derby, Animal Kingdom. During his career, Motion has saddled over 1,000 winners.

John Velazquez will be riding Went The Day Well this weekend. He is one of the top jockeys in the horse racing world and rode Animal Kingdom to victory in last year's Derby. He has ridden in 12 Kentucky Derbys, giving him a ton of experience on this track.

Went The Day Well's sire is Proud Citizen, the runner-up in the 2002 Kentucky Derby.

With these credentials and successful racing earlier this year, Went The Day Well has all the goods to win this race.

Trinniberg

5 of 5

Trinniberg may be the fastest horse in this year's Kentucky Derby. The only question is Trinniberg's endurance.

Trinniberg won his only two races this year at the Grade III level, but both were just seven furlongs. Kentucky Oaks will demand 10 swift furlongs from Trinniberg if he hopes to win the Run for the Roses.

Trinniberg's speed runs in the family. His sire, Teuflesberg, won the Woody Stephens race at Belmont Park and the Sugar Bowl at the Fair Grounds. Both were seven-furlong events, requiring just one turn.

If Trinniberg can maintain his fleeting gallop for a longer length of time, he will be a serious threat to the top contenders of the 2012 Kentucky Derby.
