Texas A&M Football Recruiting: Kohl Stewart vs. Kenny Hill QB Comparison
As Kevin Sumlin continues to build Texas A&M's 2013 recruiting class, the newest addition of QB Kenny Hill has started some controversy in many Aggie living rooms. With QB Kohl Stewart's longtime commitment still on the table, determining which one could be the future of A&M's offense is a grand topic of discussion.
I'm here to dispel the argument with a good old-fashioned quarterback comparison.
Kohl Stewart
Commitment Date: July 2011
The young man out of Houston, Texas, is considered one of the best QBs in the country. His strong arm, good decision-making and accuracy have earned him a spot on the prestigious ESPN 150 at spot No. 51.
Furthermore, Rivals has ranked Stewart as the 10th-best at his position and the 181st overall top recruit. At St. Pius X High School, he has compiled 6,268 yards on 348 completions for 59 touchdowns with only 20 interceptions. His top-notch 57 percent completion percentage is one of his most impressive attributes.
Overall, A&M has been fortunate to maintain his commitment following the firing of former head coach Mike Sherman. Sumlin and his staff must be excited to get their hands on this highly-ranked QB.
Kenny Hill
Commitment Date: April 2012
Following the Aggies' first spring game for Kevin Sumlin, A&M was able to achieve the commitment of Southlake Carroll QB Kenny Hill. Compared to the pocket-passing of Kohl Stewart, Hill is classified as a dual-threat at the position, making him considerably more athletic.
Considered the eighth-best QB and 165th overall recruit by Rivals, Hill has earned himself the title of one of the best in the state. Starting the past two seasons for Southlake Carroll HS, he has recorded 4,767 yards passing on 399 completions for 40 touchdowns with only 14 interceptions. Hill also rushed for 1,818 yards on 395 carries for 31 touchdowns, demonstrating his dual-threat ability.
Who's Better?
The million dollar question. ESPN ranks Stewart over Hill while Rivals goes the other direction, so who gets the nod?
Each QB brings a different aspect to the game with Stewart coming in as more of a passing QB and Hill supporting the run game with his dual-threat ability.
Sumlin's offense at Houston was based heavily around the accuracy and strength of Case Keenum, but things are looking to change here at College Station due to the severe difference between C-USA and the SEC.
Since we haven't had an opportunity to view how Sumlin's offense will work in the Aggies' new conference, I am uncertain of which type of QB he is looking for.
With Jameill Showers the shoe-in to start by the looks of things, Sumlin may be leaning towards the dual-threat talents of Kenny Hill, thus snaring his commitment following A&M's spring game. However, with no guarantee of how the year will turn out, counting out back-up Johnny Manziel and his play-making abilities would be foolish.
I personally look forward to seeing each QB in action once they come to Texas A&M following next season. As of right now, I'm going to lean toward Hill just because he is so versatile on the field. However, both his and Stewart's senior season may change that opinion dramatically.
Keep an eye out for both prospects to continue to play a key roll in this fantastic 2013 A&M recruiting class.
