Tracking Carolina Panthers' 2012 NFL Undrafted Free Agent Signings

Knox BardeenJun 6, 2018

The Carolina Panthers had a fine draft over the weekend, according to multiple reports. But the team wasn't done adding to its roster.

Shortly after the draft concluded, Carolina signed 12 undrafted free agents in an effort to add depth and bring in competition to camp.

Here is the list of players, provided by the NFL:

Wofford WR Brenton Bersin

LSU G Will Blackwell

UCLA DT Nate Chandler

Southern WR Jared Green

Missouri WR Wes Kemp

Utah State TE Tarren Lloyd

Idaho RB Princeton McCarty

Tennessee RB Tauren Poole

BYU T Matt Reynolds

Humbolt State RB Lyndon Rowells

Michigan DE Ryan Van Bergen

Shenandoah WR Rico Wallace

Will Blackwell, OG, LSU

1 of 11

Blackwell started 13 games for the LSU Tigers in 2011 and was selected to the 2011 All-SEC First Team. The LSU offensive line pushed defenses and helped the team scored 35 rushing touchdowns last year and only allowed 14 sacks.

Chances of making final roster: 50 percent

Carolina is a bit inexperienced at guard, and Blackwell has the pedigree to bring success to this unit.

Nate Chandler, DT, UCLA

2 of 11

Nate Chandler made the transition from offensive line and tight end to play his final two seasons for UCLA on defense.

In 2011, he played in 14 games, starting five.

Chances of making final roster: Low

Jared Green, WR, Southern University

3 of 11

Jared Green has uncanny speed and the skills to separate at the line and be a very big vertical threat. He's also got the height—Green is 6'1" and 188 pounds—to be a target for quarterback Cam Newton.

One of the knocks on Green, however, is his ball-catching ability. If Green can show he's improved his hands work at camp, look out for his upside.

Chances of making final roster: Less than 50 percent

The Panthers aren't certain who will be their No. 2 receiver on the other side of Steve Smith. If no one emerges, there could be plenty of catches to go around.

Wes Kemp, WR, Missouri

4 of 11

Wes Kemp is a huge target at 6'4". He caught 29 passes at Missouri in 2011, five for touchdowns.

Scouting Report

"

A tall, thickly strapped together wide out with the size to create mismatches. However, he isn't a real explosive kid, it takes him a while to build speed off the line, he doesn't eat up the cushion real quickly and isn't a threat to run past defenders. However, he does a nice job changing gears and slow-playing his routes.

"

Chances of making final roster: Low

Kemp didn't tear it up at Missouri, and I think Carolina would like more of an explosive threat at WR No. 2. However, he can block downfield, and don't think quarterback Cam Newton won't push for the addition of more of that.

Tarren Lloyd, TE, Utah State

5 of 11

Tight end Tarren Lloyd caught 12 passes in 2011 at Utah State for 99 yards and two touchdowns.

Scouting Report

"

Big, in-line blocking tight end with good foot speed who helped pave the way for one of the nation’s most productive rushing attacks. Former walk-on with limited career production, but understands positioning, generates movement in the run game and is a functional short receiver. Needs to get stronger.

"

Chances of making final roster: Low

I believe that Carolina could use more help at tight end. Ben Hartsock and Richie Brockel are the blocking tight ends and might stay that way. I'm not sold on a UDFA blocking tight end that "needs to get stronger."

Princeton McCarty, RB, Idaho

6 of 11

Princeton McCarty ran for 705 yards in his senior season at Idaho, scoring three touchdowns and averaging 4.7 yards per carry.

Scouting Report

It's unfair to continually compare short, speedy running backs to Darren Sproles, but that's just where McCarty gets lumped in. He's not as polished, nor as explosive, however.

Chances of making final roster: 15 percent

Tauren Poole, RB, Tennessee

7 of 11

Tauren Poole ran for 693 yards and five touchdowns during his senior season at Tennessee. That was down from 1,034 yards and 11 scores the year prior. This might be part of the reason why Poole fell out of the 2012 draft class.

Scouting Report

"

Positives -- Runs with great pad level, makes him tough to bring down, seems to bounce off a lot of would-be tacklers and runs right through arm tackles. Good outside runner, cuts close to his blockers and has speed to outrun defenders at the next level
Negatives -- Not a great open field runner, doesn't have many moves at the second level and is more of a straight-line runner. Has just average speed and isn't very big, a below average athlete for an NFL running back. Has a hard time making the first man miss.

"

Chances of making final roster: Less than 50 percent

If Poole can find an extra gear he didn't have at Tennessee, he could be the UDFA pick of the year for Carolina. However, the Panthers backfield is stacked right now, and the team might have to deal Jonathan Stewart for Poole to have any legitimate chance of landing here full time.

Matt Reynolds, OT, BYU

8 of 11

Matt Reynolds started all 13 games as a senior. In fact, he tied a BYU record for 52 career starts—every game of his college career.

Scouting Report

"

Positives -- Undersized for the tackle position but is a wide body that shows some decent strength when absorbing bull-rushing opponents. Good hand placement, consistently gets his hands inside the defenders, controls and steers defenders once locks on, can knock defenders back on their heels.
Negatives -- Not very athletic, average height, weight and speed combination. Shorter arms than you would like to see for an offensive tackle. Lateral movement and backpedal gets hurried and awkward versus speed rushers. Inconsistent kick slide, initial kick step can get too wide. Can struggle with quick inside counter moves.

"

Chances of making final roster: 50 percent

The Panthers have skilled players at tackle on the roster, but health is an issue. Reynolds could add depth on the offensive line.

Lyndon Rowells, RB, Humbolt State

9 of 11

In 10 games, Lyndon Rowells rushed for 1,486 yards and 14 touchdowns, averaging 5.2 yards per carry.

Scouting Report

Rowells features quickness, great vision and explosive rushing traits to get into the second level of opposing defenses.

Chances of making final roster: Low

Don't let Rowells' numbers fool you; he racked those up against a very talent-short conference. Carolina has a crowded backfield already, and there are running backs in this UDFA class with a better shot at making the roster.

Ryan Van Bergen, DE, Michigan

10 of 11

Ryan Van Bergen totaled five and a half sacks last year with 41 tackles.

Scouting Report

"

Height: 6-6. Weight: 283.
Projected 40 Time: 4.89.
Projected Round (2011): 6-FA.
4/25/12: Van Bergen played well in stretches, but was very quiet at other times. Van Bergen did not work out at the Combine or a major All-Star game.

"

Chances of making final roster: 50 percent

The Panthers have depth at defensive line, but could really use some help on the outside with the pass-rush. Van Bergen has an always-on motor that, if he shows it off and can get around the corner, could land him on the 53-man roster.

Rico Wallace, WR, Shenandoah

11 of 11

Rico Wallace caught 14 touchdown passes for Shenandoah last year and tallied 1,241 receiving yards.

Scouting Report

"

When watching film of Rico Wallace, you see a very smooth runner, who is able to weave in and out of traffic.  He hits his step hard and makes clean fresh cuts. He has great hands, great size and he reminds me of Dez Bryant (without the attitude).  He seems to make everyone on the field better. When asked about practice, Wallace said that “he tries the hardest he can, because he wants the defense to be ready for the opposing team’s receivers.” When I watch film on Rico Wallace, I noticed something he could improve on and that is reading the defense better, especially when they are in a zone defense.  When I asked Rico about what he could do better, amazingly he said “Read the defense better”.  This is when I knew that he was on the right path. He has been taking extra time in the game film room and is trying to better understand the zone schemes he faces.

"

Chances of making final roster: Less than 50 percent

The Panthers did very well in bringing in some wide receiver targets from the UDFA depths. Wallace was keenly watched by Carolina through the process leading up to the draft. He'll have opportunities to see if he can click with Cam Newton on deep threats.
