Kellen Moore: NCAA's Winningest QB Signs Free Agency Deal with Detroit
Two years ago, one of Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore's favorite targets was Titus Young. Look for Moore to have another chance at that passing connection.
Shortly after the NFL 2012 Draft ended, with Moore unselected, the Prosser, Wash., native signed a free agency deal with the Detroit Lions, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport as reported on MLive.com.
According to the report: "With the addition of Moore, Detroit has three quarterbacks on its roster. Moore could compete for Detroit's third-string quarterback position if the Lions sign another passer this offseason. The Lions lost third-string backup Drew Stanton in free agency."
Moore was 50-3 in his NCAA career as the starter for the Boise State Broncos, setting an NCAA record for most wins. Six former Broncos were drafted during the three-day event in New York City, but Moore's name was not called when the last selection was in.
It didn't take long for Detroit to snatch up the 6'0" quarterback.
Talking to the Idaho Statesman, Moore said: "“Very frustrating process, but a great outcome in the end. Going into it, you felt very comfortable and confident that you’d get an opportunity to get drafted. Bottom line is it didn’t happen. But it’s kind of funny you end up where you’d love to go in the first place."
According to the Statesman story, Moore and his agent, David Dunn, analyzed the NFL teams and the ones could make use of Moore's skill set. Detroit was one of those teams.
But that Moore was not drafted came as a surprise to BSU head coach Chris Peteresen. The Statesman story quoted Petersen as saying: "(NFL personnel) really feel like certainly at that position there’s a minimum cutoff (for measurables) and if you’re not that, they’re not willing to take too much of a chance. I do think there are a lot of teams who were extremely intrigued by him and who would have loved to get him on their roster. The Lions are the ones who are extremely fortunate. They’re going to get a good player...If a team gives him a legitimate chance to learn the system and get reps, I really believe he will be in the NFL for a while."
