WWE Superstar of the Week: Kofi Kingston

Drake OzJun 7, 2018

The last couple of episodes of WWE shows were marred by a lot of questionable booking and some short and pretty terrible matches.

Really, only a couple of bouts from the last Monday Night Raw and Friday Night Smackdown shows were any good, despite the fact that we got five hours of programming.

The one match that sticks out in my mind featured a main eventer and a guy who could (and perhaps should) be main eventing, but isn’t.

I’m talking, of course, about Kofi Kingston, who—in true Kingston fashion—stole the show on this week’s Raw.

Although Kingston has been stuck without a feud or a consistent spot on Raw since Evan Bourne was suspended for a second time earlier this year, he has still managed to remain relevant, and he’s done it almost entirely through how he performs in the ring.

For the second straight week, Kingston wrestled a 10-plus-minute match with one of the WWE’s top heels.

It was Daniel Bryan last week, and it was Chris Jericho this week.

And guess what? Kingston delivered on both occasions.

While the Kingston/Bryan match was really solid for a TV bout, Kingston vs. Jericho was one of the best TV matches in recent memory.

That’s not to say it was a “Match of the Year” contender or anything like that. But it was even more proof that Kingston is one of the most reliable and consistent performers in the WWE.

While he continues to be overlooked and overshadowed, he is the baby face that the WWE calls upon if it ever needs to make a heel look good.

Is it an ideal position to be in? No, of course not.

But it is a testament to Kingston’s incredible ability to make his matches matter and to make them fun and entertaining, even though he tends to lose most of them.

I still think that Kingston is grossly misused by the creative team, but seeing him put on a fantastic match with Jericho on Raw is a hell of a lot better than not seeing him at all.

He and Jericho have established some great chemistry over the years, and that shined through on Monday night.

That really shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, though, as there aren’t many superstars who Kingston doesn’t have great chemistry with.

Too bad just about every single one of them is in a better spot on the card than Kingston currently is.
