Floyd Mayweather vs. Miguel Cotto: Don't Expect Money May to KO Dangerous Cotto

Eric BallJun 7, 2018

The Floyd Mayweather-Miguel Cotto fight may not possess the star power of another certain match that everybody is waiting for, but that doesn’t mean Money May is going to breeze to victory.

Mayweather has essentially boxed four rounds since this time last year, and at the age of 35, is beginning to lose some of the quickness that has made him so successful.

Now he has to surrender even more of his speed to enter the 154-pound division. It’s not a huge deal, but it’s certainly something to factor in when fighting Cotto.

Cotto loves to throw left hooks, and it’s a great counter to Money’s deadly right jab. Cotto is looking to turn this into a brawl of sorts; that’s his style. Mayweather prefers to keep his opponent at bay, letting foes throw a punch only to counter it with a punishing blow of his own.

Cotto can’t get inpatient and wildly throw punches. As long as he stays calm and doesn’t press the issue, eventually Money May will have to turn into the aggressor.

The most important aspect for Cotto is staying calm. Victor Ortiz let the moment get the best of him and began headbutting like crazy. Cotto has to stay mentally strong and forget that he is fighting one of the greatest boxers of all time.

In addition to rust and loss of quickness, Mayweather has to be thinking about the jail sentence set to begin less than a month after the fight.

A knockout is not going to happen, plain and simple. The Ortiz KO was certainly debatable, and he hadn’t KO’ed an opponent since his 2007 bout against Ricky Hatton before that.

That’s not how Money May wins fights anymore, and against his strongest opponent in the past few years, Mayweather will be lucky to get the win—let alone knock him out before the final bell rings.

This is a fight that’s going to be incredibly close and it’s surely the best chance for Money May to drop his first ever fight.

Getting to 43-0 is not going to be a walk in the park.
